Job overview
This post is based in the UKHSA’s HCAI and AMR Modeling and Evaluation Unit, a dynamic and stimulating group of infectious disease modellers and health economists working on diverse projects relating to the burden of infectious diseases and modeling the impact of interventions against infections, both nationally and internationally. The work of the Modeling and Evaluations Unit is often used to guide policy, and close working with policy colleagues is often required. It is a world leader in its field and has many collaborative links with external academic and non-academic institutes, other public health agencies, the World Health Organization and others.
The Unit is located within the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAI) division of the Principal Medical Advisors Group. Our mission is to protect people from healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance, through world-leading public health microbiology, outbreak response, surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, modeling, research and evidence-based interventions.
Main duties of the job
- Lead the development of mathematical and health economic models related to the transmission and control of HCAI and AMR infections
- Leadership in defining model parameters by identifying, using, and analyzing complex data sets, synthesizing multiple sources of evidence, and using a range of software
- Develop and use models to enhance our understanding of HCAI and AMR infections and their associated costs
- Develop models to evaluate the effectiveness (cost) of intervention strategies
- Work and communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team and collaborate effectively with UK and international colleagues
- Disseminate work for impact, for example through national (international) meetings and peer-reviewed publications
One fixed-term appointment and one standing appointment are available. The fixed-term position is funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) as part of the establishment of a number of Health Protection Research Units (HPRU) in key priority areas. The HPRU at HCAI and AMR is a multidisciplinary partnership between the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and the University of Oxford, which will continue to find original and innovative ways to combat the key threats posed by healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance, in strong collaboration with patient representatives, the public and the NHS.
Basic criteria:
- Master’s degree in a relevant subject, such as economics, mathematics, statistics, modeling, or equivalent relevant research experience in quantitative science, public health, or policy analysis.
- Experience in economic, mathematical or statistical modeling.
- Strong skills in analyzing and interpreting data.
- Knowledge and programming familiarity with statistical packages and scientific programming (e.g. in R).
- Manage, analyse, interpret and report on complex data sets.
- Demonstrate good interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team member (in a multidisciplinary team).
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and plan your own work programme.
Desirable criteria:
- Knowledge and experience in applying health economics to the field of infectious diseases.
- Scientific writing including peer-reviewed publications.
- Experience in critically evaluating and synthesizing sources of evidence.
- Experience working in collaborative projects.
- Communicate complex ideas and methods clearly and concisely to a wide range of audiences with different technical backgrounds.
- Understand data validity, reliability and confidentiality issues.
- Demonstrate the ability to act on incomplete information, using experience to make inferences and make decisions.
- Able to demonstrate attention to detail, accuracy and methodological rigor as appropriate including the ability to identify, formulate and solve problems.
