We specialize in capturing geospatial data using remote sensing technology, and provide services in ecological mapping, ecosystem estimation, forest management, forest carbon offset, and fire risk management.

Job Description: SIG is looking for a Full Stack Web Developer to initially focus on developing a web application to implement a new Carbon protocol – Avoid wildfire emissions (AWE) – A predictive methodology under the Climate Forward program to identify climate benefits associated with fuel processing activities that reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires and associated emissions.

The successful candidate will join a software team including developers, designers and project managers. Supported by SIG’s broader group of ecologists and consultants, the application will leverage public and open source data and models to develop an application to implement the AWE Carbon Protocol. The position will grow into broader support for SIG’s wildfire or forest carbon services.

SIG is a digitally native organization with employees distributed across three continents. Therefore, the position is intended for remote work only, preferably in US time zones.

Application Deadline: Interviews will be on a rolling basis. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis until suitable candidates are identified.

Responsibilities: The following list provides a description of the responsibilities of this position:

  • Work closely with a team of 13 developers, designers, and project managers to create, deploy, and maintain high-impact web applications for science sharing, such as environmental simulation models, spatial data distribution platforms, or offline user interfaces for scientific analyses.

  • Work closely with product/project managers to deliver on time, on budget and within scope.

  • Complete developments using Clojure/Clojurescript, Java/Javascript, and other languages/technologies as required below.

  • Work in a distributed team environment with frequent text, audio, and video communications with other developers

  • Implement version control procedures using Git and Github/Gitlab, including build/close issues, creating/reviewing/merging pull requests, and good branch management

Job Specifications: The following list provides a summary of job requirements:

  • – At least three (3) years of experience in web application development

  • Experience in Clojure/Clojurescript or experience in a different Lisp dialect (e.g. Scheme, Common Lisp)

  • Experience in web mapping using OpenLayers or Mapbox

  • Experience in geospatial processing using PostGIS, GeoTools and/or GDAL/OGR

  • Experience in SQL DB programming in Postgresql and PostGIS

  • – Familiar with network-related software or microservices

  • Familiar with functional RUI development using ReactJS and/or Reagent

  • – Familiar with functional programming techniques (e.g. pure functions, immutable data, closures, lazy, function composition, saving)

  • Comfortable work in a Linux environment from the command line and management of remote servers via SSH

Additional preference will be given to candidates who have.

  • Domain expertise in wildland fire science, environmental monitoring, or carbon accounting

  • Experience running geospatial/scientific models from the command line

Conditions of Employment: The position is appointed on a full-time basis. In addition, part-time consulting work may also be considered depending on the candidate’s experience and availability.
