Faculty of Data Science (Tenure/Tenure Track, Position #F1050A), Old Dominion University
The School of Data Science at Old Dominion University invites applications for the open position of (Associate/Associate/Full) as part of a multi-position hiring pool aimed at… Autonomous systems powered by artificial intelligence for medicine and health To start Fall 2026. This is a 10-month fixed appointment/track to start July 25, 2026. Candidates will be considered for appointment at all ranks subject to appropriate qualifications. The group, which includes faculty recruited from the College of Data Science, the Batten College of Engineering and Technology, and the Hampton Roads Biomedical Research Consortium (HRBRC), integrates interdisciplinary research in secure data infrastructure, real-time sensing, and trustworthy analytics to support autonomous decision-making across hospitals, clinics, and remote care settings.
We are looking for faculty to develop/maintain a vibrant, externally funded interdisciplinary research program in Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) and Data Science with a primary focus on connected and autonomous systems for healthcare, including but not limited to:
- Privacy-preserving federated learning for intra-hospital sensor networks
- Optimizing digital flow for twin-based hospital
- Confidence and explainability in self-diagnosis
- Multimodal adaptive sensing for remote patient monitoring
- Large-scale health data infrastructure for autonomous systems
- AI-powered solutions
- Cyber-physical security for medical autonomy
- Data integration and synchronization flow for autonomous medical systems
- Connected autonomous systems for emergency response and disaster relief
This group is focused on leveraging cutting-edge data science and artificial intelligence to transform healthcare delivery across hospitals and clinics, especially in underserved communities. This group’s research is expected to advance innovative data-driven approaches and independent technologies that expand high-quality health care to medically underserved areas, enhance hospital efficiency, and ensure safe and reliable care across diverse clinical settings.
The appointee is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses and collaborate with other faculty in the School of Data Science, the Batten College of Engineering and Technology, and the Hampton Roads Biomedical Research Consortium. Appointees are encouraged to establish collaborations with the newly formed Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences, as well as scientists at nearby federal research facilities such as the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Laboratory), NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) and the Naval Surface Warfare Center in the Hampton Roads area.
About the College of Data Science: As one of the three academic units in the interdisciplinary schools at Old Dominion University, the College of Data Science is a new initiative focused on educating students in the rapidly growing field of data science, conducting cutting-edge research and serving as a hub for AI education and research in the university community. Since its inception in the spring of 2023, the college has grown to include ten core faculty and more than 80 affiliated faculty across campus, with a broad range of active research projects ranging from bioinformatics, web science, and survey data science to scientific machine learning, explainable AI, and generative AI. The College of Data Science actively collaborates with researchers from renowned facilities such as Jefferson Laboratory (sponsored by the Department of Energy), NASA Langley Research Center, the Hampton Roads Biomedical Research Consortium (HRBRC), Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences (VHS, formerly EVMS), and the Office of Enterprise Research and Innovation (OERI).
