Experimental Medicine Program Leader, Research Infrastructure at the National Institute for Health and Care Research

Job title
We are looking to recruit an experienced, inquisitive and motivated Director to provide leadership to a team managing a range of high profile National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) experimental medicine research infrastructure funding schemes.
Functional purpose
The Program Leader will provide leadership for the overall grants and research management of NIHR’s experimental medicine research infrastructure portfolio, which includes leading biomedical research centers, clinical research facilities, commercial research delivery centers, health technology research centers and others. The post holder will lead the work to drive the evolution of the Experimental Medicine portfolio and shape its future direction. In addition, they will play a key role in the NHRI’s interaction with the experimental medicine community and will work closely with senior colleagues from Department of Health and Social Welfare.
the Program leader Reporting to the Assistant Director of Research Infrastructure, he will be responsible for the activities of a team of Senior Research Directors and Research Directors, and will work closely with the wider Infrastructure team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the delivery and strategic development of the experimental medicine research infrastructure portfolio:
- Portfolio development: Develop and maintain expert knowledge of the funded portfolio in order to identify gaps or opportunities for greater impact and build strong cases for new activities.
- Strategic direction of current financing plans: Oversee the delivery of scheme reviews and assessments for your portfolio to develop recommendations for next funding calls.
- Work in health and care research: Represent the schemes and portfolio in discussions with colleagues from DHSC, NIHR and beyond to ensure synergies are identified and can be leveraged. Contribute to activities aimed at increasing the visibility of awards within academic, clinical, public and governmental forums.
- Research commissioning: Provide administrative oversight of the submission of new funding competitions, develop application guidance notes, organize International Committee meetings, produce minutes and provide feedback to applicants.
- Developing new funding calls: Respond to ad hoc requests from DHSC/NIHR to develop and submit new priority funding calls, and mobilize resources to develop an appropriate assessment mechanism and monitoring processes.
- Contract management and annual reporting: Support the team to process requests/contractual changes required during the term of the award and information requests (such as parliamentary questions, freedom of information requests or ministerial briefings). Monitor award progress through the annual reporting process, sign off with the Assistant Director on award holder comments and monitor risk management.
- Team management and support: Guide the development of individuals within your team to allow them to reach their potential. Coordinate and delegate activities within your team and work with the Associate Director and Program Lead for Applied Health Infrastructure to share learning and ensure consistency across the wider Infrastructure team. Support efficient ways of working while maintaining attention to detail and delivering within deadlines.
- Stakeholder engagement:Provide productive relationships with key stakeholders including Infrastructure Center Managers. Work with managers to develop and support the implementation of collaborative working between awards and individual plans. Oversee the co-production of strategically relevant agenda for Infrastructure Center Directors meetings and other forums to keep NIHR researchers informed of the latest initiatives and policies.
- Flexible team support: Provide a high level of support across the Infrastructure team and the National Human Rights Institution, participating in projects and working groups as required.
Line management:
- This position will be responsible for a team of six, with three team members reporting directly.
Qualifications
Knowledge, experience and technical skills required:
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- PhD (or equivalent) in biomedical or health sciences research (or significant experience in the equivalent sector)
- Significant relevant experience of managing research funding in a funding agency, charitable, clinical, academic or industrial organisation
- Experience in direct management, staff development, planning and monitoring workloads
- Excellent project planning and management skills; Able to set priorities, manage multiple tasks, and work to achieve challenging goals and deadlines
- Ability to demonstrate understanding of strategic issues in health and care research funding and policy, particularly in experimental medicine
- A strategic thinker who is able to interpret complex information while having a clear view of the “big picture”
- Ability to use creative methods to communicate complex information effectively to individuals and groups from a range of different backgrounds and different levels of seniority
- Committed team player with the ability to build effective working relationships

- Understand the impact of research and how to monitor and measure it

Compensation, benefits and work arrangements:
- salary: £58,000 to £61,200 per annum
- location: Twickenham, London / Hybrid Business Model
- Contract type: Full time, 12 month fixed term contract
- working hours: 37.5 hours per week, 7.5 hours per day

Note: We offer a range of work-life balance and flexible, family-friendly working arrangements. This is a hybrid office-based role with all staff expected to attend our offices a minimum of 4 days a month, typically working 1 day a week, and may be more, depending on team requirements.
