Primary Accountability:
The Director of Development – Athletics (DOD) represents the Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation (the “Foundation”) in fundraising for Washburn University and the Department of Athletics. Working collaboratively with Foundation leadership, and with support from Foundation staff, the Department of Defense will work with the Director of Athletics to organize, manage, and participate in fundraising activities with a particular focus on athletic activities. As such, the Department of Defense identifies, grows, oversees, and solicits an active list of potential individual, foundation, and corporate donors.
Main duties:
- Participate in the development of a quantitative plan that identifies resource needs for athletics as determined by the Athletic Director;
- Coordinate with the Athletic Director on fundraising strategies for athletics priorities;
- Attend fundraising events, university receptions, community events, and sporting events;
- Work closely with Foundation staff on annual fundraisers, special sporting fundraising events, planned giving assets, Blackbaud’s NXT information system and prospect research and management to ensure ongoing integrity of operations and protect development database security;
- Participate in foundational and mathematical goal setting sessions, project status sessions, and donor relations management sessions;
- Maintain knowledge of the full range of gift instruments available, including direct gifts, trusts, wills and gifts of estate;
- Integrating athletic department development activities with university-wide development programs;
- Maintains positive relationships with development peers and athletic department staff;
- Lead volunteers and staff in creating the vision for sporting fundraising events including, but not limited to, golf tournament
- Attend required and recommended functions and meetings;
- Perform other fundraising duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university is required;
- 5 years of progressive professional experience in a high-paced work environment required;
- Experience in intercollegiate athletic programs is required.
- Proven fundraising experience or equivalent experience required;
- Superior verbal and written communication skills required;
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision required;
- A strong sense of ethical behavior is required.
- Working PC knowledge using common software applications is required;
- Ability to travel nationwide required; Must have an acceptable driving background;
- Experience in event management preferred.
- Preferred fundraising for college athletics;
- An understanding of university development is preferred.
- Experience with Raiser’s Edge preferred;
- Demonstrated involvement in development/advancement organizations (CASE, APRA, NSFRE, AFA, etc.), conferences, workshops, and/or other professional development activities is preferred;
- Knowledge of gift processing, evaluations, recognition requirements, developmental milestones, stewardship basics, and preferred types of gifts;
- Reliable and predictable presence
Physical requirements:
- Ability to sit for long periods of time.
- Ability to read computer screens and mail.
- Ability to unload and move supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
Work environment:
- Professional and deadline-oriented environment in an office environment;
- Interact with employees and customers.
