Director of Broward College, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Job profile summary
The Manager will ensure this happens by developing a comprehensive strategic plan for growth and day-to-day operation along with seeking and obtaining private and public funds to supplement the existing budget. Additionally, this position is intended to manage the Buehler Planetarium and Observatory, including daily operations, personnel management, financial resource management, maintenance programs, repair projects, and promotion of this unique facility to the college and community. This position operates this space as a university and community facility, provides program support and presentations to college groups, and offers programs open to the public.
Minimum education:
Bachelor’s degree required
Minimum experience/training:
Six or more years in a business or position and three years of management experience
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Basic functions:
Daily – 15%: Manages and directs operations of the Buhler Planetarium and Observatory. Provides opportunities and services to the college (both students through academic classes and administration), the local school district, private schools, and the community. This place is managed so that any university class, group or department can benefit from it, with appropriate support such as technical knowledge and staff. Some examples include science, education, religion, and mathematics classes that receive presentations from planetarium staff.
Weekly – 5%: Supervises the design and development of all publications, brochures and newsletters.
Daily – 5%: Oversees routine maintenance, construction projects, and repair projects for all equipment and facilities for the Buhler Planetarium and Observatory.
Daily – 5%: Maintains and manages budget and resource allocation to planetarium operating funds.
Daily – 5%: Supervises and evaluates employees to maintain quality and high performance.
Daily – 15%: Oversees the production and presentation of multimedia planetarium shows to ensure academic program support needs for college-level education, the Broward School District, Florida Atlantic University, and others.
Daily – 5%: Provides a safe environment consistent with accepted standards and practices for indoor events and the Buehler Planetarium to ensure the comfort and well-being of guests. Ensures appropriate safety and emergency procedures to enable safe and rapid evacuation
Weekly – 10Percentage: Research, identify, cultivate, and solicit operating funds and supplemental donations through grant proposals, special events, and other projects – in conjunction with the Senior Director and the Foundation.
Weekly – 10%: Supervises and reports activities to the Buehler Trust in connection with the annual grant-funded training program to train professionals in advanced careers in planetarium and observatory science.
Weekly – 10%: Participates in local, national and international organizations, including Broward County Cultural Affairs, International Planetarium Association, Southeastern Planetarium Associations, Florida Museum Association, and Florida Planetarium Association to bring the latest technology, skills and communications to British Columbia (as designated).
Weekly – 5%: Establish and develop professional partnerships; Current example: Coordinating the publication of the Southeastern Planetarium Society’s professional journal.
Weekly – 5%: Supports recruitment to British Columbia through direct interaction with students and faculty participating in events in public and private schools, and by hosting student groups from across the region.
Other – 5%: Performs related duties as assigned.

General understanding of the external environment and how it impacts academia in general and Broward in particular, including political, legal, environmental, educational, financial, and social impacts.
Strong knowledge of the College’s structure, policies, practices and impact on own area
Strong supervisory and team building skills
Ability to partner with others across the college and externally to exchange information, collaborate on projects, share resources, etc.
The ability to influence others about the benefits/importance of an idea or business plan and gain their support or commitment
Strong negotiation skills and the ability to reach points of mutual agreement and benefit among peers and colleagues
