Data Center, Operations Facilities Technician

Your turn:
This position provides facilities support for Global Relay’s mission-critical data center facilities and related server environments and infrastructure. This includes the specification, installation, maintenance and testing of mechanical equipment, electrical equipment, server and storage systems within established standards, as well as the development and maintenance of data center support systems such as automated system provisioning, asset tracking, space planning, cable management, and equipment monitoring and maintenance. The primary focus of this position will be around facilities support, including electrical and HVAC building maintenance and repair. Activities require timely troubleshooting of hardware including servers, mechanical systems, electrical systems and the use of monitoring application software and operating systems to monitor, diagnose and resolve unique and non-recurring problems. These responsibilities require independent and team-based analysis, initiative and good judgment, communication and problem solving while working with little supervision. This role will be primarily facilities related.
Your job:
- Ensure the facility is maintained to the highest possible standards to ensure 100% uptime is achieved.
- HVAC maintenance, filter replacement, motor replacement, cleaning and inspection
- Performs daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of the facility, recording results, and planning repairs and maintenance.
- Inspect, test and document the electrical system.
- Receive, unload, assemble, install and connect servers, storage systems and related components.
- Ability to safely lift and move large and difficult equipment.
- Light manufacturing, metalwork and construction as part of facility expansion and changes.
- Building maintenance including; Pressure washing, painting, and basic repairs to doors and hardware.
- Assist operations staff with installation, configuration and ongoing ease of use of servers, storage systems, peripheral equipment and software
- Maintain a well-organized inventory of all equipment and parts.
- Perform rotating shift coverage to meet all support needs as needed.
- Willing to do shift work, including night shifts and emergency coverage as needed.
- Liaise with contractors to ensure system availability and maintain the highest working standards.
- Assist with ongoing improvements to facilities.
- Assist with third party technical audits as needed
- Managing storage spaces and storing devices and equipment.
- Waste management of packaging materials and waste produced as part of facility operations.
- Destroy decommissioned IT equipment before disposal.
- Basic custodial duties as required, loading recycling bins, wiping surfaces, etc.
About you:
The successful candidate will have a high school diploma or higher education. Experience supporting facilities and data center needs within a mission-critical environment, or have an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience relevant to the role.
Basic qualifications include:
- Familiarity with mechanical equipment systems (CRAC, CRAH, evaporative cooling) required.
- Knowledge of electrical power distribution systems and how to use them in the data center.
- Metalworking, fabrication and construction skills to perform equipment repairs and installations.
- Experience with complex construction and mechanical system controls.
- Excellent judgment skills in making critical decisions.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in oral and written English
- Strong organizational skill and initiative
- Strong documentation skills.
- Comfortable working under pressure in a fast-paced environment
- Computer skills in Word, Excel, Outlook.
- Basic CADCAM skills are an asset.
- The trick is in the ability to solve problems
- Excellent cable management skills required. Photos of previous cable jobs will be an asset.
- Experience working in a mission-critical data center facility is an asset
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as independently in an efficient and organized manner in a complex and challenging environment
- Previous experience working in an environment with a formally structured change management process is an asset
- Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently as needed
- Ability to learn quickly and take on additional roles and responsibilities
- Proper use of personal protective equipment as needed for various duties previously performed.
Working conditions:
Working conditions entail working in the following environments:
- Extended work periods in data center spaces, which can be noisy and have extreme temperatures (10°C to 40°C)
- Working outside in building repairs and maintenance (pressure washing, painting)
- Work in an office to complete documents
- Long periods of standing or working on your feet
Physical requirements:
This position requires the following abilities:
- Lifts and carries 50 pounds, and enjoys long periods of standing
- Climb and work from ladders
- Work with power tools such as drills, saws, and pressure washers
- Work with hand tools such as wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, and pliers
compensation:
Global Relay advertises the pay range for this role in accordance with BC pay transparency laws. Individual pay rates are determined by evaluating factors such as experience, skills, education and professional background.
The range below reflects expected annual base salary, which is just one element of our comprehensive total rewards package designed to reflect the pay philosophy, culture and values ​​of our company. British Columbia – Base Salary Range
$50,000 – $60,000 CAD
