Join us in the fight to change the rules that govern the economy, and make finance work for us, not against us. The Americans for Financial Reform Education Fund (AFREF) is seeking… Assistant Director To lead our consumer financial protection work.
The Assistant Director, in collaboration with AFREF staff and coalition partners, will develop policies and strategies to combat consumer financial abuse and seek more equitable alternatives, advocate for the long-term survival of an effective Office of Consumer Financial Protection, provide leadership and support to the nationwide consumer coalition, and connect consumer financial justice issues to broader economic and racial justice and accountability projects. Companies. Issues in their portfolio will include unwanted charges, lending discrimination, debt collection, auto lending, forced arbitration, predatory loans, student debt and more.
The Assistant Director will research and write materials to explore and explain issues to a variety of audiences; Analyze, respond to and formulate regulatory and legislative policy proposals; And work with AFREF leadership, staff, and diverse coalition partners to set a policy agenda for change and create and drive strategies to advance it.
AFREF played a leading role in winning passage of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act and establishing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; We are leading the fight for broader transformations in the financial system to advance economic, racial, and social justice and address climate change. AFREF staff develops policies and strategies in collaboration with a coalition of more than 200 consumer, civil rights, labor, grassroots and other organizations, along with academics and other policy experts.
Responsibilities:
- Lead AFREF’s work in consumer financial justice, including developing and articulating policy priorities that can lead to meaningful change at scale, and identifying needs and opportunities in a complex and changing environment.
- Provide leadership to AFREF’s Consumer Financial Justice Coalition, including facilitating policy collaboration, creating and implementing joint strategies, and identifying and building relationships with new allies to increase the breadth and strength of the coalition.
- Analyze and respond to policy developments and legislative and regulatory proposals.
- Provide policy and research support to grassroots partners and work with them to amplify their perspectives and messages; explaining consumer policy issues to non-specialists; and making connections to broader economic, racial, and social justice work
- Collaborate with AFREF research, digital, and communications staff, and with coalition member staff, to develop effective narratives, themes, frameworks, and messages to articulate our policy priorities and their role in advancing racial and economic justice.
- Develop and write memos, reports, and other materials related to consumer financial justice issues for a range of audiences, including the media, state and federal policymakers, coalition partners, and the public
- Communicate AFREF’s views and policy priorities through social media and journalism, in collaboration with our communications staff, including through drafting press releases, blog posts and more
- Represent AFREF at meetings and events with policy makers and develop relationships with state and federal legislative and regulatory staff, as well as industry experts, academics, practitioners, and partners who can contribute to our understanding of consumer financial justice issues and collaborate with us in advancing shared policy goals.
- Collaborate with the Senior Grant Writer to draft and develop effective fundraising materials, including grant reports and proposals
Qualifications/Experience
The ideal candidate will be a creative, impact-oriented, strategic leader who gets things done. Other highly desirable experiences and qualities include:
- Commitment to racial and economic justice;
- At least 10 years of relevant experience;
- Excellent policy analysis skills and experience in developing innovative policy solutions to complex problems.
- Ability to write and speak effectively to a wide range of audiences and distill complex topics into accurate, accessible, and persuasive presentations.
- In-depth understanding of federal regulatory and legislative processes, familiarity with state policy making, and knowledge of consumer financial justice issues and the advocacy landscape. The desire to learn new issues and fields;
- Strong strategic thinking, strong analysis, excellent judgment, and a record of successful advocacy;
- Demonstrated ability in coalition leadership including achieving results, effective collaboration with allies and colleagues, and strong project management skills.
- Ability to network with many different types of organizations and constituency groups and experience working with diverse communities;
- Ability to manage multiple projects and navigate complex dynamics;
- Strong relational skills and comfort working independently and collaboratively with other employees and alliance members.
- A law degree or advanced degree in a related field is desirable but not required for this position.
Salary and benefits
Annual salary range is $104,700 – $133,300, commensurate with experience. Generous benefits, including medical, dental, vision, 401k, paid vacation and sick leave, and cell phone and transit allowance. The AFREF office is located in downtown Washington, DC. AFREF offers a fully flexible hybrid/remote and remote work schedule (for employees residing in the greater metropolitan area) – depending on the nature of the position and organizational needs.
