Role summary
NYMA is in startup mode — we’re rebuilding systems, scaling up, and moving quickly.
The Academic Dean is our educational leader and builder: you will raise academic standards,
Install a robust teacher evaluation and competency system, and launch programs (dual enrollment, AP, honors/terminal degrees). You’ll also wear multiple hats—designer, coach, data leader, and people manager—as you develop faculty and drive measurable gains.
Basic responsibilities
Building strategy and programs
Formulate and implement a 3-year academic plan (rigor, outcomes, program mix, staffing).
Design and launch dual enrollment/AP/honors pathways; Managing College Board audits and
University memorandums of understanding.
Post coherent course sequences (including PG/NCAA considerations where applicable).
Evaluation, KPIs and data systems
Establish school-wide assessment standards (unit/quarter common standards; grades
handrail).
Identify teacher KPIs (e.g., lesson implementation, quality of assessment, student growth,
attendance/homework completion, intervention follow-up) and dashboards/trackers.
Run a quarterly data cycle: Set goals → analyze results → conduct improvement sprints
Departments → Report.
Personnel management and faculty development
• Directly manage department heads (or leads) and supervise the evaluation of teachers using a clear method
Teaching framework/model.
• Implementing a rhythm of monitoring and training (rounds + courses with…
Evidence/artefacts and reviews of student work).
• Create a PD calendar and run PLCs focused on harmonizing curriculum and literacy across the world
Curriculum and evidence-based education.
• Support and develop faculty through clear expectations, timely feedback, growth plans, and
to get to know.
Student achievement and support
Oversee placement, scheduling, and interventions (MTSS/RTI, tutoring/credit recovery, ELL
supports).
Coordinate testing (PSAT/SAT/AP), ensure test integrity, and align consultation on course rigor
Post-secondary pathways.
Multifunctional implementation and startup
Partner with operations to protect academic time within military/athletics schedules.
Collaborate with admissions on academic suitability/readiness for graduate study; Provide fast spin mode
Decisions.
Build lightweight processes that are quickly measurable and repeatable and wear different hats as needed (e.g.
Temporary chair covers, curriculum purchases, academic evenings for parents).
Compliance and budget
Ensure compliance with NYSED, accrediting bodies, College Board, and testing protocols.
Manage academic budgets (texts, lab supplies, educational technology licenses) and evaluate return on investment.
Success metrics for the first year
• Live KPI system: KPIs for teachers are defined, dashboards are run, and 100% of teachers are involved in one system
Monitoring/training cycle by Q2.
• Direct assessment system: Joint assessments and guardrails are implemented across all
Core courses by Q2; Two full data cycles were completed by the end of the year.
• Program Build: At least two dual enrollment agreements and AP audit approvals secured;
Four-year itineraries published.
• Faculty development: PLCs meet every two weeks. > 90% on-time feedback within 5 school days

Candidate profile
Master’s in Education or related field; 2+ years of secondary leadership (Dean/President/AP or
equivalent) with documented student outcome gains.
Proven People Manager at setting goals/KPIs, coaching them, and holding teams accountable in the process
Building culture.
Experience in evaluation design, instructional training, and data-driven improvement.
Experience launching and sustaining AP/Dual Enrollment or similar advanced programs.
Startup Mindset: Aligned with action, comfort with ambiguity, ability to wear multiple hats and build
Simple and durable systems quickly.
A clear and consistent communicator with strong change management skills.
