Salary range: $54,300 – $67,900 based on a 35-hour work week. The salary for this position will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s education and/or experience in relation to the position.

What will you do?

Working with a small, active team of DUC BC biologists and engineering staff, you will assist the team with habitat management, small dams and water control in DUC wetlands in the BC Cariboo-Cilcotin region.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct inspections, operations and maintenance of water control structures and dams.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships and work closely with private landowners, First Nations, agricultural producers and other project partners.
  • Direct seasonal employees and contractors to complete tasks.
  • Managing project data through various internal tracking systems.
  • Maintain field equipment, operate small engines, and ability to physically lift 50 pounds of equipment.
  • Conduct a mix of office and field work.
  • Assist biologists with waterfowl surveys, bioinspections and biodiversity monitoring.
  • Use GPS technologies and the ability to navigate back roads to remote wetland projects using satellite communications devices (Garmin InReach) to ensure safety during field work.
  • Effective communication between co-workers.

Who are you

An enthusiastic team player and effective communicator with the ability to build positive working relationships with fellow DUC staff, municipal and regional government staff, project landowners and other conservation agencies.

Possessing strong leadership and personal skills. Self-motivated and detail-oriented, they enjoy a complex and changing environment and can manage multiple projects to tight deadlines.

Obtain a university degree in a related discipline such as agriculture, environment and natural resources. Equivalent practical field experience will also be taken into consideration.

A minimum of 3 years of experience and knowledge in infrastructure maintenance, water management, fleet management, habitat stewardship, and/or landowner communication makes you the ideal candidate for this position.

requirements

  • Valid Class 5 BC driving licence
  • Experience operating various equipment such as: ATV/UTV, chainsaws, brush saws, satellite rig pumps, and hand tools. Or the desire to learn
  • Comfortable truck and trailer driving or desire to learn
  • Comfortable working alone in remote locations on a regular basis
  • Understanding of local agricultural, industrial, First Nation or conservation practices
  • Demonstrated experience working and communicating with a wide range of partners such as landowners, First Nations and public service agencies
  • Experience using computers with MS Office programs
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work long/flexible hours, in remote locations, in a variety of weather conditions, with some overnight travel

  • Experience with field navigation and/or data collection applications
  • Relevant experience and knowledge in local natural resource sectors
  • Experience in supervising heavy equipment and purchasing materials
  • Awareness of occupational health and safety practices in British Columbia.
  • Understand British Columbia’s Water Sustainability Act, dam safety regulation, and best management practices
