The Royal College of Art (RCA) is calling for applications for the role Teacher (research) in photographymaternity cover position of 0.8 FTE up March 31, 2027. About the program
the Master of Photography The program at the RCA is home to a unique, interdisciplinary community of artists, writers, and scholars working at the forefront of contemporary photographic practice and image-making. We understand photography as an expansive and evolving field that includes still and moving images, publishing, performance, installation, social practices, sound, synthetic media, text, and writing.
Commitment to Practicality, experimentation and speculation– To explore photography as a means of research unconstrained by the traditional boundaries of subject, medium or genre. Students and staff work together to question what a photograph is, and what it can become, within contemporary art and cultural discourse.
Our approach to teaching and research deals with photography in relation to… Social and political discussions, Intercultural dialogues& the The transformative effects of technological change. We look at the image in the context of environment, ethics and representation, and encourage very rigorous and bold practices in terms of imagination.
The role
We are seeking to appoint a Research artist Whose work and teaching engage the relationship between Text and imagewidely understood. Post carrier will contribute 0.4 ft to Master of Photography program and 0.4 ft to Ministry of Foreign Affairs Arts and Humanitiesincluding teaching inside Poetics of care optional.
The successful candidate will bring a contemporary understanding of the expanding field of photography, including its intersections with… Artificial intelligence, the environment, and the politics of representation. They will demonstrate sensitivity to the ethical, social and imaginative dimensions of care – qualities that are central to the pedagogical and research culture of both programmes.
Working collaboratively with colleagues across the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the Tutor (Research) will contribute to teaching, supervision, assessment, pastoral support and the wider intellectual life of the RCA. They are also expected to maintain active research and professional practice that is consistent with the College’s commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Person specifications
necessary
- An active artist and researcher with an internationally recognized practice in photography and its expanding field.
- Expertise in the relationship between text and image, and/or socially or ethically committed modes of visual practice.
- Evidence of research excellence and a clear research plan in line with college standards.
- – Proven ability to deliver high quality education at graduate level.
- Commitment to promoting inclusive, supportive and diverse learning environments.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across various disciplines.
- Doctorate (PhD or equivalent practice-based), or equivalent professional standing.

- Relevant research or teaching experience Welfare, health, environmental or decolonial practice.
- Attention b Artificial intelligence and the future of photographywith the ability to engage critically with emerging image technologies.
- Successful experience Grant or project funding.
