The OHSU Foundation is a nonprofit arm of Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon, dedicated to supporting innovation, education and patient care through philanthropy. Since its founding in 1971, the Foundation has raised donations to support medical research, scholarship, and hospital programs—most notably the integration of Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in 2021. Through responsible gift stewardship and strategic partnerships, the Foundation plays a central role in advancing the University of Oregon’s mission to improve health and equity throughout Oregon.
About the role:
The Senior Director of Development – Corporate Engagement will be responsible for rebuilding a comprehensive, company-wide corporate engagement program and developing a strategy to identify and engage new and existing corporate partners who can drive philanthropic support for OHSU’s mission areas of education, research and clinical care.
In addition to building the program, the Senior Director will also manage a portfolio across the full spectrum of corporate engagement – ​​from qualification to solicitation to oversight – with a primary focus on the company’s prospects at the major and major gifts level. The Senior Director will be responsible for developing close partnerships with OHSU faculty, the OHSU Innovates group, which includes technology transfer, collaboration, and entrepreneurship, the Knight Strategic Alliances team, and external partners of the OHSU Foundation, to develop and sustain meaningful institutional partnerships. This position will develop and maintain strong support from corporate and industry partners, and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure coordination of solicitations and approaches to companies, corporate organizations and related organizations.
The expected annual salary range for this position is $125,000 – $154,000. Transportation support is available.
What will you do:
Institutional Relations Development and Investment Portfolio Management Program (60%)
- Build a sustainable institutional engagement program, leveraging many existing relationships in a collaborative manner.
- Lead corporate fundraising strategy in collaboration with OHSU and OHSUF partners; Providing best practices and innovative initiatives to enhance corporate philanthropy
- Work collaboratively with multiple units across OHSU and within OHSUF to ensure streamlined interactions with corporate partners. Build strategic alliances and coalition support to drive and increase corporate philanthropy and engagement across OHSU schools, centers and programs
- Build and manage a pipeline of potential companies and recruited donors with current and potential bids ranging from $50,000 – $1,000,000+.
- Cultivate, solicit and mentor corporate prospects through networking, engagement and collaboration with OHSU partners
- Partner with internal and external stakeholders (Board members, OHSUF faculty, OHSUF development officers, and leaders) to develop and maximize strategies for securing gifts and grants from corporate partners aligned with institutional priorities.
- Collaborate with OHSU Alliance teams to identify existing industry collaborators or sponsors that can be further grown to provide charitable gifts
- Conduct strategy meetings and solicitations with institutional and corporate executives, program officers and representatives
- Communicate clearly and synthesize complex scientific ideas in easy-to-understand ways
- Develop any relevant policies and procedures required to ensure smooth and cohesive engagement of corporate partners
- Create and present reports and materials to highlight the impact of corporate engagement
- Collaborative partnership across OHSUF teams to align corporate engagement strategies with hybrid gift/grant giving capabilities
- Develop recognition and benefits packages for companies and industry partners in alignment with appropriate OHSUF stewardship policies, laws and regulations
Identifying and qualifying corporate partners (40%)
- Identify and develop external relationships with companies and commercial organizations, to familiarize potential corporate prospects with OHSU’s strengths, capabilities and priorities
- Identify new corporate partners and re-engage lapsed corporate relationships
- Conduct research to determine alignment between corporate funding interests and OHSU priorities and funding needs; Identify key decision makers in corporate philanthropy and facilitate their engagement with OHSU leadership
Minimum qualifications:
- 10+ years of corporate and/or foundation fundraising experience with a significant focus on major gifts level ($1M+) corporate fundraising, corporate partnership management experience, and/or business development experience
- Experience in healthcare or related industry, or academic/research experience in life sciences
- Proven experience building a fundraising program or growing a significant corporate fundraising program.
- Demonstrated knowledge of corporate philanthropy, with an emphasis on academic medicine and/or health and science.
- Strong project management and organizational skills. Ability to manage, track and prioritize multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
- Sound judgment and deep commitment to high professional standards and ethics
- Compassionate and culturally responsive. Maintains the ability to work well with diverse internal and external individuals and groups
