Full time: 35 hours per week

Fixed term: For up to 3 years

The Center for Electronic Frontiers (CEF) at the University of Edinburgh is accepting applications for a Research Fellow with expertise in artificial intelligence for the design of electronic devices. The headquarters will be located at the King’s Buildings campus

Opportunity:

This position is linked to the UKRI APRIL AI Hub which aspires to develop AI tools to accelerate innovation across semiconductor technologies, new microchip designs and systems engineering – leading to faster, cheaper, greener and more energy efficient electronics overall. As one of nine UKRI-funded AI centres, this is a highly visible program at both national and international levels.

The job holder will work closely with a team of talented researchers and the APRIL Operations team to lead the development of new AI capabilities, tools and methodologies that can enhance the productivity of engineers in the design, development and testing of advanced electronic devices and systems. More specifically, the job holder must have experience in applying but also developing artificial intelligence tools that can design and perform experiments in search of the best manufacturing parameter settings to create electronic devices with optimal performance and productivity; It extends from optimal “machine recipe” prediction to automated testing and productivity evaluation.

The post holder will have the ability to engage with world-leading experts in AI and electronics in Edinburgh and at other UK Higher Education (HE) institutions but also with industrial partners to ensure the relevance of their research in tackling the latest challenges in electronics.

The successful candidate will have experience of project development and project leadership in a research context, along with excellent communication, presentation and organizational skills. They will enjoy working in a dynamic environment and will be able to work on their own initiative as well as being an active member of the team. The role will report to the APRIL Center Director (Principal Investigator), with ongoing engagement with other researchers in the Center as well as academic leaders.

  • A proven track record of research in the field of artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on electronic device design or a closely related field.
  • Experience presenting the results of research projects in the context of electronic device design and/or artificial intelligence; Any record of peer-reviewed journals and conference papers in a relevant field (desirable).
  • Experience in AI tools for designing electronic devices
  • Ability to adapt, accept new ideas, be prepared to face new challenges, and adjust plans to meet new priorities.
