Department of Applied Mathematics

Research Assistant Professor in Optimization and Operations Research / Statistics and Data Science / Financial Mathematics / Engineering and Computational Mathematics / Mathematical Sciences (three positions) (Ref. 251010011)

The Department of Applied Mathematics (AMA) is one of the component departments of the College of Computer Science and Mathematics. Apart from making a significant contribution to most of the other academic programs at the University by providing service teaching, the department also offers Master’s programs in Applied Mathematics for Science and Technology, Operational Research, Risk Analysis, Quantitative Finance and FinTech. Starting from the academic year 2025/26, the department is offering a new Bachelor’s Scheme in Applied Mathematics and Financial Analytics and accelerated integrated Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs and will launch a new Master’s programme, Master of Mathematics for Artificial Intelligence Technology in 2026/27. Members of the department have experience in applied optimization and control, engineering calculation, operational research, management science and applied statistics, financial technology, data science, and machine learning. There are currently 56 academic members and approximately 154 research personnel in the department. The department has established a Joint Laboratory of Applied Mathematics with the Academy of Mathematics and System Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (JLab), a CITIC-PolyU Interdisciplinary Joint Laboratory for Digital Mathematics AI (AIJLab) and a Mathematical Optimization Innovation Laboratory with Huawei. Appointees are expected to actively participate in laboratory activities.

Duties

Appointees will be asked to:

1. Conduct research as primary duty and actively seek external research grants, such as General Research Fund, as principal investigator or co-investigator;
2. Providing high-quality education at undergraduate or postgraduate level;
3. Contributing to departmental service. and
4. Carrying out any other tasks assigned by the department head or his delegate.

Qualifications

Applicants must:

1. Hold a PhD in Mathematics/Statistics/Financial Mathematics/Operations Research/Computational Mathematics/Applied Mathematics or a closely related field with experience in data science and analytics;
2. Preferably have at least two years of relevant post-doctoral research experience;
3. Demonstrated promise for a high level of creativity in research and teaching in some subdivision of his field;
4. Be able to demonstrate effective teaching in the classroom; and
5. Must be highly proficient in written and spoken English.

Terms of Service

A highly competitive package that includes a medical benefits plan and a bonus payable at the end of the term which is usually for two to three years initially, with the possibility of extension.
