Remote Business Applications Developer – (Remote in Pittsburgh) at Reed Smith LLP

Position Summary Responsible for creating and maintaining applications and reports related to core applications supported by the Business Applications team. Performs technical analysis, architectural design, development and implementation of client/server applications and advanced reports based on specifications determined by the Business Applications Development Manager, Assistant Business Applications Manager, Applications Manager, PMO Office and various business unit heads/managers/coordinators. Work closely with the Business Applications Development Manager to define and document technical specifications for solutions in response to requests and business challenges. Adherence to robust development/programming standards. Serve as a resource for others within and outside the group and department that require development. Assist others with technical expertise as needed. Responsible for different levels of application development related to different business units (Accounting, Marketing, HR, Business Intake, etc.) related applications. Job Duties and Responsibilities Work closely with the Business Applications Development Manager and Assistant Business Applications Manager to provide technical input for feature specifications and business analysis. Developed SQL integrations and reports using MS Reporting Services. Design and develop databases and store data using the SQL language. Migrate, transform, import and export data to and from SQL databases. Contribute to the overall design of our solutions with a focus on scalability, maintainability and performance. Understand and use object-oriented design patterns and concepts to create n-tier applications, custom controls, custom libraries, and web services. Define and communicate development best practices at the code and project level within the development team. Assist in educating and mentoring new and existing employees on programming techniques, methods, policies, and best practices. Identify improvements where necessary to current procedures and practices related to application development. Work with other teams to develop efficiencies in existing company operations through the use of application automation and integration. Take ownership of projects, users, and requests that are particularly confidential, high-profile, or otherwise sensitive, keeping the Business Applications Development Manager or other staff informed as appropriate. Provide 2nd/3rd tier support for custom applications and 3rd party applications supported by the Business Applications team. Lead, coordinate, schedule and communicate any significant changes to the business application infrastructure to other members of the IT department through the established environmental change control process. Provide assistance to IT colleagues, including but not limited to application troubleshooting, testing, and support. May volunteer or be selected to serve on special committees, work groups, project teams, or escalation teams related to various company-wide IT initiatives. Initiatives may be specific one-time events (such as research, testing, rollouts, upgrades, and installations) or ongoing activities. All other duties as assigned. Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in a computer-related field. Additional training, education, and/or certifications in related fields are preferred. Experience: Total 5-7 years of experience in IT application development. At least 3 years development experience using Microsoft Development Stack. Experience using Windows Server, strong knowledge of relational database design, and SQL programming including stored procedures. Proficiency in using APIs and other integration tools. Experience working in a cloud environment. Experience in analyzing and programming large and complex data sets. Experience in developing and maintaining SQL stored procedures and scripts. Skills: Advanced SQL Server development skills – developing SQL stored procedures and functions, troubleshooting, performance tuning, data modeling and analysis. Understand relational database concepts and the impact of different designs on performance. Strong ability to provide effective solutions to complex problems and requests. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Able to perform well with very limited supervision and adherence to tight deadlines. Ability to interact effectively with individuals at all organizational levels and adapt to changing schedules and requirements. Ability to create technical documentation. Strong organizational and prioritization skills. Ability to perform well with very limited supervision and adhere to tight deadlines. Preferred: Experience working with Snowflake Cloud Data Platform. Experience with Azure Data Factory (pipeline development, monitoring and scheduling). Some experience working with Business Intelligence data visualization tools (Tableau/Power BI/SSRS preferred). Experience in the legal industry is a plus. Other Supervisory Responsibilities: None. Provides overall technical team and project leadership. Provide important input to the Sr. Business Applications Manager regarding annual performance evaluations of team members. Equipment used: Personal computer and other office equipment such as telephone, calculator, photocopier, scanner, etc. Essential Job Functions: Ability to analyze complex problems, identify root causes and develop innovative solutions. Ability to use independent judgment and discretion and adapt to changing work situations. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with different personalities at all levels. Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods, extensive use of eyes, and finger, hand, and wrist dexterity associated with prolonged computer use. Ability to utilize technology, including computers and communications devices. Ability to read and interpret written documents, computer screens, and other visual displays accurately. The ability to hear and understand verbal communication, including conversations and instructions, is important for effective collaboration and communication. Provide support and coverage outside of work hours as needed, including evenings, weekends and holidays. This may include responding to critical incidents, performing system maintenance, or assisting with project deadlines. Must work in the office as required. Working Conditions: The job is remote. However, the individual must reside within one or two hours of commuting distance from the Pittsburgh office. This is to accommodate potential emergencies, special circumstances or occasional work requests in the office. Although the role primarily follows a regular schedule, there may be instances where flexibility is required to work beyond standard business hours, making proximity to the office important. PAY RANGE: This represents the current lower and upper end of Reed Smith’s pay range for this position. Actual pay may vary based on various factors, including but not limited to location and experience.
