Postdoctoral research assistant at the University of Oxford

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in relativistic simulation of jets from stellar-mass black holes at the University of Oxford, Department of Physics.

We are looking for an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to work on relativistic hydrodynamic simulations of jets from stellar-mass black holes in binary X-ray systems. The goals of this work are to build on recent simulations performed by our group (e.g. Savard, Matthews et al. 2025 and Gasealahwe, Savard et al. 2025) to better understand a wide range of astrophysical aspects.

You will join a large team working to observe and interpret such jets, and become part of the international “X-KAT” team that uses new data from the MeerKAT radio telescope to study these jets. Furthermore, they will become a core member of the “Blackholistic” team (Oxford-Amsterdam-Radboud) which includes relativistic simulations on all scales from a black hole to a large jet, as well as analyzing data from the Event Horizon Telescope. You will also have the opportunity to teach.

You must have a PhD (or be about to complete) in a field related to astrophysics or physics.

Experience performing numerical simulations in astrophysics is essential, as well as evidence of the ability to work independently and have sufficient specialized knowledge and technical skills to work within established research programmes.

This is a full-time position, with a fixed term of 12 months.

The deadline for applications is Noon UK time on Friday 24 October 2025.

You will be asked to upload a CV (three pages maximum, including list of publications or NASA ADS link) and a two-page supporting statement of research interests and experience. The supporting statement should explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the position using examples of your skills and experience.
