Description of the situation
Pomona College is seeking to hire an economist whose primary research interests are in macroeconomics. Qualified candidates must have completed a doctoral degree. By start date, July 1, 2026. Preferred candidate will start at the rank of Assistant Professor; Although advanced assistants and early associate professors with evidence of teaching effectiveness and research excellence will also be considered.
Pomona College faculty teach two courses each semester, and after the first year, they are expected to advise students and engage in service in the department and college. Faculty are also expected to maintain an active research portfolio. The Department of Economics makes every effort to support tenure-track faculty with teaching responsibilities that reflect their research interests and goals. Furthermore, the College offers several forms of scholarship support, including a full year’s research leave prior to a fourth year placement, following a successful third year review.
Pomona College’s student body consists of approximately 1,700 students, more than 23% of whom are first-generation college students. The College values ​​access to higher education and is committed to walk-in admissions and a no-loan financial aid policy. In addition, the college promotes student academic success by maintaining a student-faculty ratio of eight to one and committing to a residential liberal arts education. Pomona College faculty are also actively involved in the academic development of their students, serving as academic advisors and routinely supervising senior thesis projects.
Founded in 1887, Pomona College is the founding member of the Claremont Colleges, a unique group of five contiguous undergraduate colleges and two graduate institutions located in Southern California, about 35 miles east of Los Angeles. Students at the Claremont Colleges may co-register for courses at any of the colleges, and faculty and staff often collaborate across the colleges. The Department of Economics currently consists of 13 tenure-track or tenure-track faculty members, and there are more than 50 economists across the Claremont Colleges.
