We are looking for an Environment Field Officer at our office in Gbongan, Osun State and Ikom, Cross River State to play a critical role in ensuring the effective implementation of environmental policies in our agricultural projects, engage and train farmers, and work directly with other Field Staff and stakeholders to support/promote Beyond Beans’ climate smart activities in Nigeria.

Roles and responsibilities

• Motivating farmers to practice environmental practices such as climate smart agriculture and agroforestry, making our training and support successful by engaging with farmers in an informal way to build trust and good relationship.
• Implement activities aimed at achieving the objectives of Beyond Beans environmental projects, in particular within the framework of our commitments to the environment and agroforestry. These include:

• Joint training: Support individual project farmers in farm business decision making through individual training on sustainable agricultural practices and creation of plans tailored to the project farmers
• Nursery management: establishing and supporting shade tree nurseries and/or cocoa nurseries
• Distribution of seedlings: coordination of cocoa seedlings and distribution of shade trees
• Climate smart cocoa: providing training to farmers
• Access to inputs: Assisting farmers in accessing and producing fertilizers, as well as in the correct use of agrochemicals, to improve productivity.
• Demonstration farms: Establishing experimental farms and hosting training courses on them to train farmers on best practices.

Report to the Agroforestry and Environment Supervisor on achievements and challenges on a regular basis.

requirements

• Someone who is well motivated and proactive
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to communicate in local dialect (Yoruba/Ikom/Pidigin)
• At least a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering or related courses such as resources, environmental sciences or similar studies
• At least 2 years of practical experience in crop production and experience in extension services related to cocoa farm management and/or agroforestry will be an added advantage.
• Successful candidates will be based in project sites across the South-West and South-South of Nigeria
• Knowledge of RA certification is a plus
• Tech savvy and experience using digital data collection
• Independence and ability to work with little supervision as well as within a team
• Ability and interest in packaging and working with farmers in cocoa growing communities
• Can work under pressure and is keen on continuous learning and improvement
• Must be able to ride a motorcycle
