Position Summary:
the Data specialist You will play a pivotal role in advancing TEA’s mission by ensuring the effective use of data to enhance organizing, advocacy, and member engagement. This position will manage TEA’s core data systems, integrate teacher/staffing data, and generate actionable insights that guide state and local decision-making. Additionally, the specialist will provide training and technical assistance to TEA staff, leaders and local affiliates to expand data fluency across the organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain and manage TEA internal databases such as NEA 360 and Civis.
- Integrate and align data across platforms to ensure accuracy, security, and accessibility.
- Import, clean, verify and reconcile teacher/district staffing rosters.
- Manage bulk upload to NEA 360 database.
- Ensure compliance with TEA data privacy standards and internal protocols.
- Track and analyze membership trends, teacher salary data, and hiring shifts to uncover opportunities for growth and advocacy.
- Develop custom reports, dashboards, and contact lists for employees, leaders, and local associations.
- Providing segmentation, modeling and target lists to support policy impact and campaigning.
- Train TEA staff, board members, and local leaders in the practical use of the organization’s databases (e.g., NGP VAN, NEA 360, Civis) and educational research.
- Create training session guides to increase data trust among users.
- Provide ongoing technical support to ensure data tools are effectively applied in advocacy and member organizing.
- Partner with organizing, advocacy, communications and membership teams to ensure a data-driven strategy.
- Translate technical findings into clear insights for non-technical audiences.
- Provide responsive support to employees and affiliates with urgent data and reporting needs.
- Accept other duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Strong Excel skills. Ability to perform data cleaning, analysis, and reporting.
- At least 2 years of experience working with relational databases, CRM, or campaign data platforms.
- Proven ability to produce data reports, summaries, or visualizations for strategic use.
Preferred competencies:
- Experience working in a labor union, advocacy organization, or educational non-profit.
- Understand Tennessee’s public education systems and policy environment.
- Previous experience designing and delivering training or professional development.
- Proficiency with NGP VAN and/or NEA 360, Salesforce, or similar membership/advocacy tools.
- Strong communication and training skills with diverse users.
