Christ’s College invites applications for a Senior Research Fellowship in the Social Sciences of Biodiversity, extendable for a period of 5 years (renewable) commencing between 1 January and 1 October 2026, upon mutual agreement.

The newly established Darwin Hameed Center will include Fellows and PhD students pursuing research on biodiversity from a range of perspectives, and priority will be given to the potential for the Fellow to actively collaborate and explore common ground with others at the Centre. Following an appointment in the field of Conservation Biology, the Center invites applications from suitably qualified candidates who can complement this agenda with a focus on the social sciences, especially nature-based economics and demography, and their interaction with biodiversity conservation.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in a similar subject (e.g. economics, conservation science, demography, sociology, geography, statistics) by the time of taking up the position. Previous post-doctoral experience is desirable, although we also welcome applications from non-traditional academic backgrounds, including those working in policy in NGOs, multinational organizations or in government. They will have a strong track record of internationally recognized research addressing the social sciences of biodiversity conservation, as demonstrated by a strong publication record, participation in international conferences and symposiums, and work on innovative research projects.

Applications must include a three-page research proposal including references and a full CV. Applicants must also arrange for two academic referees to provide references by the deadline. Proposals that address the relationship between population, economy and biodiversity conservation are particularly encouraged.

The successful applicant will be an independent investigator. Joining an existing research group in Cambridge that best fits their area of ​​interest will be encouraged, as will collaboration with Cambridge-based institutions such as the Cambridge Conservation Initiative, the University Museum of Zoology, and/or the University of Cambridge Botanic Garden. Fellows active in research are also eligible for an annual allowance of up to £2,750 to cover research expenses, such as travel to conferences, and includes an allowance for equipment and books. The Fellow will be encouraged to apply for independent research funding from appropriate bodies.

In addition to pursuing research, the fellow is expected to participate fully in university life and activities. If desired, the Fellow will be welcome to undertake some university teaching during the term, which will be paid for at normal supervision rates. The Fellow will be a member of the College Board of Directors, eligible to participate on College committees and enjoy the full privileges of a Fellow. Perks include seven free meals a week and an office in the college. Salary on the University Spine will be within the range of grades 7-9, depending on experience. Faculty Research Fellows are appointed to the lowest grade, except in exceptional circumstances.

It should be noted that a successful Fellowship candidate who does not have an automatic right to work in the UK will be subject to UK visa requirements. The College will provide informal advice and assistance but ultimately it will be the candidate’s responsibility to obtain the necessary visa.

Conditions of employment

The successful candidate will be employed by the College for a fixed term of five years, dates to be agreed, as a Senior Research Fellow subject to the College’s regulations and orders. They will be elected to a Fellow of the College and will be expected to reside in Cambridge. Salary will be determined upon hire and will be at the university level within the 7-9 grade range, depending on experience. The fellow will be eligible to participate in the University Retirement Program. There is a small annual entertainment allowance. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research for 40 hours per week.
