Associate General Counsel, Hardware Commercial Function at OpenAI in San Francisco, California

About the role
We are looking for a Senior Lawyer to lead commercial legal strategy and implementation across OpenAI’s rapidly growing hardware portfolio. This is a cross-functional role that will collaborate closely with the Procurement, Supply Chain, Partnerships, Finance and Product teams to organize, negotiate and manage transactions that will support OpenAI’s long-term hardware ambitions.
We are looking for an experienced technology transaction lawyer who thrives on ambiguity and wants to help define the rules of the business game for leading hardware systems in the age of AI. This role reports to our Deputy General Counsel.
This role will be based in San Francisco, California.
This role will:
Proprietary business legal strategy and risk management for OpenAI hardware transactions.
Draft, negotiate and advise on complex agreements with device suppliers, manufacturers, distributors and technology partners.
Support strategic partnerships involving AI hardware and hardware supply chains.
Develop frameworks for procurement, licensing, and collaboration across the hardware ecosystem.
Partner with Finance and Operations teams to align contract terms with business and compliance requirements.
Collaborate with policy and regulatory colleagues on issues affecting global supply chains, export controls, and manufacturing.
Build efficient and scalable contracting processes that support rapid OpenAI hardware development while managing risk.
You may thrive in this role if you:
Over 10 years of legal experience, with a significant focus on technology transactions and commercial contracts.
A combination of in-house expertise and the experience of first-class law firms.
Experience negotiating agreements in the hardware, instrumentation or robotics areas.
Familiarity with global supply chains, export controls and manufacturing regulations.
Demonstrated ability to work with independence and sound judgment in high-tech, fast-moving environments.
Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to transform complexity into actionable, business-aligned guidance.
Experience advising on cross-border deals and global regulatory frameworks.
Previous experience with intellectual property licensing, supply agreements, joint ventures, or other complex business deals in hardware industries is a strong plus.
