Durham University International Study Center (DUISC) was launched in September 2017. You will work within a culture of promoting learning, teaching and assessment through a developmental approach, which for you means independence, innovation and development opportunities.

You will teach the English Language and Study Skills modules in the International Foundation Year (Level 3), Pre-Masters (Level 6), Pre-Masters (Level 6), Advanced Academic Literacy and Writing modules or a combination of these modules. You will play a key role by contributing to the development of educational materials and formative assessment. You will provide grades and comments on formative and summative assessments. You will enable students to reach the level they need to progress to Durham University by providing student-centred, engaging and innovative teaching.

About the role

  • Preparing and presenting educational seminars and educational sessions
  • Contribute to the delivery and development of educational modules and sessions provided by DUISC
  • Preparing unit tests and other forms of formative and summative assessments;
  • Participate in standardization and moderation activities within the ISC and across the ISC network
  • Marking student formative and summative assessment submissions and providing timely feedback to students on their performance, including writing regular student reports and tutorials
  • Develop and update study materials for modules and teaching sessions, including virtual learning environment (VLE) module materials.
  • Work with the center’s student experience team in providing induction, orientation, and registration programs
  • Notify and liaise with colleagues as necessary to ensure all students receive appropriate ongoing support for care and progress
  • Implement quality assurance procedures at unit and teaching session levels and contribute to the annual monitoring and review of courses
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student attendance and performance
  • Attend and contribute to standardization, moderation and other quality assurance meetings.
  • Participate in regular meetings with teaching and support staff to contribute to the effective overall management of the program and student life cycle
  • Maintain and submit accurate and timely records of teaching and other activities
  • Participate in regular training and development activities and keep a record of these activities
  • Carry out any other duties as required from time to time by the Center Managers.

About you

  • Bachelor’s degree (essential)
  • QTS teaching qualification (desirable)
  • Diploma in English Language Teaching or equivalent (essential)
  • Master’s degree in a related discipline (desirable).
  • Experience of teaching in higher or further education in the UK and experience of working with over 16 international students
  • Experience teaching in an international higher education environment (desirable)
  • Ability to develop and update appropriate EAP-focused educational materials and experience working within a virtual educational environment is preferred
  • Significant experience in face to face and online delivery
  • Confident user of a wide range of online teaching software
  • Proficiency in teaching and administrative IT skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, etc.)
  • Student-centered and client-centered approach
  • Commitment to continuous professional development
  • Strong record keeping skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to work under pressure and within deadlines
  • Enthusiasm and drive to be a performance-driven team player
