3200825EB Research Fellow in Sustainable Batteries for Seamless Textile Electronics for Healthcare
Flexible batteries with seamless integration into textiles will revolutionize the healthcare system. These batteries can power sensors to continuously monitor vital signs (such as glucose) and antennas to instantly transmit information to a doctor when urgent action is needed. However, these batteries must be completely safe and non-toxic, energy dense and lightweight; Requirements that are often conflicting.
SUSTAIN Program Scholarship (www.sustain-pg.org) will address this challenge by using water, lithium, and special polymer fabrics to build batteries. Compared to conventional batteries that use solvents and toxic organic salts, SUSTAIN batteries will operate using conductive, non-toxic lithium hydrated polymers that allow for high deformability and expansion.
Working collaboratively with leading textile designers, printed electronics and wireless communications experts, and sustainability analysts, the SUSTAIN program will build practical demonstrations of textile electronics that can serve as wearable doctors.
