Position Summary The SQL Database Engineer is responsible for ensuring the performance, availability, and security of our SQL Server databases. They will work closely with application owners and development teams to design, develop, implement and maintain database solutions that meet business requirements. The SQL Database Engineer will also be involved in troubleshooting database-related issues and providing support to users as needed. They will perform database administration tasks associated with various enterprise-wide systems, as well as some enterprise application responsibilities. This role requires a deep understanding of database management and information security principles and proficiency in related technologies. Serve as an internal advisor and resource to others in the department. Job Duties and Responsibilities Design, implement, and maintain high-performance database systems to support our applications and business operations. Improve database performance through capacity planning, query optimization, index tuning, and other performance tuning techniques. Perform database engineering and administration tasks, including installation, configuration, tuning, monitoring, backup, recovery, and troubleshooting. Develop and implement data management policies, procedures and best practices to ensure data integrity, availability and security. Implement and maintain database security measures, including access controls, encryption, and auditing. Collaborate with software developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to design and deploy database solutions that meet business requirements. Lead database-related projects, including upgrades, migration, and deployment, from planning to implementation. Design and implement backup and recovery strategies to ensure data integrity and availability. Perform regular backups and test recovery procedures to ensure recovery is possible. Design and manage database security by configuring user access, roles, permissions, and auditing. Implement security best practices to protect sensitive data. Design, configure and maintain high availability solutions such as AlwaysOn Availability Groups. Develop and test disaster recovery plans to minimize downtime in the event of failure. Apply patches and updates to SQL Server instances and related components in a timely manner. Conduct regression testing to ensure compatibility with existing applications. Design, develop and maintain proactive monitoring and alerting solutions to detect and respond to database issues in real time. Develop scripts and automated jobs to simplify monitoring tasks. Providing expertise on cloud and management of PaaS-based database platforms, including but not limited to Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory, and more. Lead, take ownership and work on projects related to the company’s Document Management System (DMS) including upgrades, conversions, integrations and migrations. Document Management System (DMS) tasks related to managing data transfers, document import/export, user access, advanced troubleshooting, and escalation with vendors to resolve system related issues. Advanced support for DMS related systems including knowledge management systems, full-text indexing/search functions, records management systems, and ethical firewall systems. This includes working with business and other technical teams to implement and support these systems. Develop documentation for database configurations, procedures, and best practices. Provide training and support to application owners and developers as needed. Stay up to date on emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in database management and recommend innovative solutions to enhance our database infrastructure. Maintain skill and knowledge level through formal and informal means. May volunteer or be selected to serve on special committees, work groups, project teams, or escalation teams related to various company-wide IT initiatives. Initiatives may be specific one-time events (such as research, testing, rollouts, upgrades, and installations) or ongoing activities. All other duties as assigned. Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred Similar or similar training and experience in information technology. Microsoft certifications (MCSE and/or MCDBA) a plus. Required Experience: 5+ years of database administration experience, with a focus on enterprise-level database systems (e.g. Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL). Strong proficiency in database design, implementation, optimization and troubleshooting. Extensive experience in database performance tuning, query optimization and capacity planning. In-depth knowledge of database security principles and best practices. Hands-on experience in database backup and recovery procedures. The database is always present in Availability Groups, Multi-Tiered and High Availability Application Architecture, SAN environment, Virtual SQL Server environments, PowerBI, PowerShell, and productivity tools (such as Office, Project, and Visio). Familiarity with document management systems is a plus. Skills: Strong analytical, organizational and communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and solve problems using creative solutions. Ability to organize and prioritize workload, and remain flexible in an environment of constantly changing priorities. Demonstrated ability to lead projects and people, make sound decisions, and remain calm under pressure. Strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to interact with all organizational levels. You are sometimes called upon to work hours that exceed your normal daily schedule. The ability to fulfill work requests within the office as needed, so proximity to the office is important. PAY RANGE: This represents the current lower and upper end of Reed Smith’s pay range for this position. Actual pay may vary based on various factors, including but not limited to location and experience.
