The North Carolina State Teachers Association is seeking a talented, dedicated director with experience in union, community, or election organizing to fill the position of Director of Organization. The Organizing Director, along with other Organizing Directors, will lead a multi-level organizing team to develop field plans, assist in developing local strategic plans, and achieve targeted membership growth and engagement goals that transform our local residents and communities.

About the North Carolina State Teachers Association
The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) is building a movement to protect and transform public education in our state. Last year, NCAE members developed and approved a historic strategic plan for the next four years that includes unprecedented investments to organize and grow our association.

In recent years, our locals have also fought for and won historic pay increases for custodians and other staff, and have used the momentum generated by those victories to propel themselves into ranking among the fastest-growing National Education Association affiliates in the country.

We are on the cusp of building strong local unions that reclaim the promise of public education from sandhills to mountains.

Responsibilities include:

  • Recruit, train, coach and manage a team of organizing staff and members in targeted local populations throughout the state, including supervision of daily tasks, frequent visits to work sites, meeting facilitation, debriefing, shadowing, on-the-job organizing, and leading training sessions as needed.
  • Design, implement, manage, and evaluate plans, campaigns, and programs designed to grow membership, worksite leadership structure, and local union strength
  • Evaluate programs using data collected by field staff and ensure adherence to data collection standards across field teams
  • Support an organized team culture that is innovative, hungry to learn, and inspired to fight to defend and transform our public schools
  • Develop, design and maintain resources, training courses and systems to improve organized team performance

Skills and qualifications:

  • – At least 5 years of experience in organizing work
  • At least two years of management experience; Experience in management in an organizational context is preferred
  • At least 3 years of experience designing political, legislative, electoral, or issue-based campaigns preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a deep understanding of building trust, and the ability to communicate with people from different backgrounds
  • Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability and flexibility in a fast-paced environment
  • Understanding and commitment to the types of training, resources, and organization of administrative support systems that set organizers and key organizers to success
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, meeting frequent and tight deadlines
  • Excellent collaborator and team player
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends when needed
