Principal Scientist – Blue Carbon at the Center for Environmental, Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences (CEFAS)
Work style: full-time, part-time, flexible working, job sharing.
The Center for Environmental Science, Fisheries and Aquaculture (CEFAS) is the UK’s leading and most diverse center for applied marine and freshwater science. The successful applicant for the role of Principal Scientist at Blue Carbon will be a leader in the Natural Capital team, working on Blue Carbon’s science and policy aspects of projects alongside colleagues with a broad mix of analytical and advisory skills. The successful applicant will lead and provide technical/policy input to current and future research programs and support government decision-making in this prominent area.
You will have an excellent understanding of blue carbon framing for emerging habitats, an established scientific portfolio and track record in a relevant field, UK and international networks and understanding of relevant policy, including the implementation of UNFCCC mechanisms to mitigate climate change, and excellent technical skills in project delivery.
Personal specifications/basic standards
The successful applicant will have an excellent understanding of blue carbon framing for emerging habitats, an established scientific portfolio and track record in a relevant field, UK and international networks and understanding of relevant policies, including implementing UNFCCC mechanisms to mitigate climate change.
In addition to the above, other essential criteria for this role are:
- A track record of providing clear advice on blue carbon to a range of stakeholders (e.g. government policy teams, NGOs and the wider scientific community) with the ability to quickly understand and assimilate new evidence, assess uncertainty and identify potential impacts in liaison with external bodies and networks.
- Proven technical expertise (as evidenced by publication history, positions of influence) and existing networks in blue carbon, climate science or carbon cycles, with a strong understanding of blue carbon framing.
- Proven track record of developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve agreed goals.
- Ability to communicate complex scientific and technical concepts and messages to a range of audiences including experts/non-experts, and prepare clear and concise written materials.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment, and be flexible, proactive and self-motivated.
- Excellent technical leadership project execution skills (including team leadership), ability to deliver within tight timelines and identify risks and opportunities.
