North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics

Position type: 10 Months Permanent, EHRA College, FLSA Exempt, 1.0 FTE
Hiring salary range: Salary is commensurate with education and experience.

Description of duties:
The positions are full-time, ten-month appointments in the Mathematics Department on the NCSSM-Durham campus, with full benefits through North Carolina State. Staff report to the Durham Head of Mathematics and are responsible for providing instruction for assigned courses.
General duties:
Plan and develop an educational program that helps students internalize specific course content and skills;
Develop and connect students to clear course aims and objectives;
Participate in disciplinary and cross-departmental course meetings;
Creating a curriculum and other required administrative documents;
Taking attendance and enforcing the attendance policy;
Grading and providing feedback to students in a timely manner, submitting grade reports on time with adequate feedback when needed;
Communicate with parents and support staff when necessary;
Hold a minimum of three office hours per week and conduct educational sessions as outlined by the department;
Structuring and managing an environment conducive to learning;
Model students’ responsibility to themselves and others.
Follow the school’s mission, policies and procedures;
Get involved in both January semesters by proposing and teaching approved January semester courses;
Participate in foundational duties for all faculty including required meetings, academic advising, participation in events (at least two Saturdays per year), professional development and networking, written evaluations, and participation in the NCSSM community;
Serve on standing committees at the department, faculty, and school levels;
Write recommendations for up to 15 students each year, upon request;
Participate in professional development and personal intellectual growth activities;
Participate in one or more of the following professional duties:
Providing information, services and expertise to schools and other organizations;
Assist students with special projects, independent and individual study, and seminar-based studies.
Participate in the admissions process by recruiting, selecting, and advising prospective students.
Participate in NCSSM alumni activities.
Providing assistance for school-sponsored programs and extracurricular activities.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
Competitive candidates will have experience teaching courses in calculus, data science, or other advanced mathematics coursework. Experience using educational technology; Commitment to designing new curricula; Willingness to participate in boarding school programs including social, recreational, and counseling responsibilities outside of regular school hours.
Education and experience:
A master’s degree in a related field and previous teaching experience in mathematics at the precalculus level or higher is required.
