About the department

North Carolina State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest-rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital includes more than twenty clinical services with board-certified specialists who are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring that VH is at the forefront of veterinary medicine. Essential job duties

This position provides care and coordination of patients in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Randall B. Terry Jr. Center. Companion Animal Medical Center. The Internal Medicine Service provides pioneering care for patients who require diagnosis and treatment of various health problems.


A person in this department must have in-depth knowledge of veterinary medicine and a strong desire to work in a rapidly changing educational environment with a diverse group of people.


Direct patient care duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Participate in client check-in, patient admissions, updates, scheduling, and questions.
  • In-depth knowledge of service patients identified through student and physician communications regarding presenting problems, diagnoses, treatment options, and expected overall plan of care.
  • Perform and support various diagnostic tests and procedures including; Support and monitor anesthesia, prepare and support endoscopy, and routine diagnostic blood tests
  • Prepare patients for procedures through standard aseptic techniques, including; Clip, prep, rub and twist
  • Maintain a clean/sterile environment and provide assistance during routine and surgical procedures
  • Providing direct patient care and medical treatments including Temporary protection systemblood pressure monitoring, venipuncture, intravenous catheter placement, sedative/therapeutic therapy infusions, dressings, NE tube placement/maintenance
  • Performing moderate risk drug calculations, incl CRIintravenous fluid, medical pain management, and antibiotic management
  • Providing recovery and post-anesthesia care services, including pain management, for a range of elective procedures such as endoscopy and NG/NE tube placement
  • Direct observation of patients for various diagnoses related to the disease process, including but not limited to; Diabetes, infectious diseases, endocrine diseases, in addition to diseases of the blood, digestive system, living, renal and respiratory disorders
  • Effective use of specialized patient care equipment such as intravenous fluid pumps, pulse oximeter, blood pressure monitor, and syringe pump
  • Working together with diagnostic groups associated with CT imaging, Magnetic resonance imagingUltrasound, and radiography


The position provides primary patient, departmental, and hospital coordination of workflow, information, and teaching with duties to include, but not limited to:

  • Work directly with clients, rDVM and hospital staff to facilitate communication, forecast, integrate and coordinate services that improve internal and external satisfaction and overall patient care.
  • Record and communicate a variety of data related to patient care, client communications/rDVM, and diagnostic tests/treatments using hospital information systems.
  • Orients, teaches, and trains new staff, students, interns, and residents in relevant policies, procedures, and patient care
  • Maintain a clean work environment in accordance with hospital standards, infectious disease and hospital policies, along with… Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Environment, health and safety Radiation safety policies and training courses
  • Participate in financial responsibilities such as procedural/consulting fees, billing communications, and estimate updates
  • Responsible for patient visit coordination including but not limited to; Order radiological/surgical/anesthesia procedures, medication orders, and provide diagnostic specimens
  • Maintain all necessary equipment in clean, functional condition and keep all necessary supplies stocked appropriately for procedures and daily patient care
