Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Engineering with Artificial Intelligence at the University of Bristol

The role

The Faculty of Civil, Aerospace and Design Engineering (CADE) is seeking to appoint a permanent Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineering. This reflects the College’s strategic commitment to AI in Engineering, with Bristol recently being named ‘AI University of the Year’.

We welcome applicants with strong academic or industrial research backgrounds. You must demonstrate in-depth knowledge of your research area and present clear plans for future research that complement and extend current activities.

This post will support the launch of a new MSc in Engineering with Artificial Intelligence (first intake in September 2026). The successful candidate will contribute to the design, implementation and potential leadership of this programme. You will also support university teaching in Machine Learning (ML) and AI across our Aerospace, Civil and Design programmes, all of which are ranked in the top five in the UK.

If you are passionate about advancing engineering science through AI and excited to collaborate with leading experts, we encourage you to apply. Appointment will be made at grade J, K (Lecturer) or L (Senior Lecturer), depending on experience and qualifications.

What will you do?

You will contribute to research, teaching and academic administration at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Senior lecturers will assume leadership roles in developing and supervising research and teaching, with significant input into strategic planning and management.

Lecturers (grades J/K) will actively support teaching and research in the school while building independent portfolios. Senior Lecturers (Grade L) must demonstrate a strong record in independent research, securing funding, strategic development, and leadership within academic teams.

Main purpose of the role

  • Deliver high-quality education in the new Master of Engineering using AI and support its management.
  • Conduct impactful research in machine learning and artificial intelligence applied to engineering challenges.
  • Providing effective academic management within CADE.
This post is in Track 1 (see Section 7 for more details).

You should apply if you have:

  • Strong research background in ML/AI applied to engineering (e.g. aerodynamics, fluids, aeroacoustics, composites, structures, flight dynamics, control).
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and collaborate effectively.
  • A clear and innovative vision for future research that builds on CADE’s existing strengths.
  • A passion for teaching and delivering engaging, high-quality education in ML/AI.
  • A collaborative approach to both research and teaching.
