Chiba University invites applications for a researcher to work on observational impact assessment studies and observing system design in the context of numerical weather prediction (NWP). The successful candidate will conduct research on the impact of new meteorological observations on numerical weather prediction, including observations from upcoming satellite missions and emerging platforms such as drones. The work will also include studies of monitoring specifications and deployment strategies, thus contributing to the design of next-generation monitoring systems. Depending on the applicant’s interests, the research may focus on one or more of the following topics:
• Develop methodologies to reduce uncertainty in climate projections using constraints emerging with data assimilation
• Evaluating the impact of new atmospheric observations and improving observing networks
• Develop cloud resolution models that include water isotopes
• Drone monitoring of clouds and rainfall
• Estimating climate model parameters using water isotope information
