The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (ISEEM) at the University of Alabama in Huntsville invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor/Associate Professor with an expected start date of August 2026. Candidates with exceptional credentials in teaching, research, and service may be considered for senior appointments. Duties include research, teaching, and service with an emphasis on interdisciplinary research supported by external funding, and the inclusion of student researchers. We are looking for candidates with a strong background in applying mathematical and scientific problem-solving methods to broad areas of industrial engineering. Desired areas of expertise include, but are not limited to, quality engineering, continuous improvement, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence/machine learning, robotics, digital twin application, simulation, process management and improvement, ergonomics, and human factors.

About the department

The Department of Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (ISEEM) offers BSIE, MSE, MSOR and PhD programmes. grades. The department has an ABET-accredited undergraduate program in Industrial and Systems Engineering. Our faculty currently consists of six tenure-track and three clinical members. Our student body includes approximately 140 undergraduate students and 150 graduate students. Faculty research interests include artificial intelligence/cash systems, digital engineering and digital twins, ergonomics, robotics, additive manufacturing, advanced manufacturing, complex systems engineering and design, systems science, model-based systems engineering, stakeholder preference modeling and communications, and quality systems design. and evaluation, lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, and engineering management. In fiscal year 2025, the department has allocated more than $2.2 million in research expenditures. This area aims for rapid growth in faculty, students, and research funding due to the large engineering and scientific workforce at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, Redstone Arsenal, Cummings Research Park, and other industries in the area. The growth of manufacturing in the Huntsville area provides additional opportunities with the division having partnerships with companies such as Mazda Toyota, Polaris and Blue Origin.

About the college: The Faculty of Engineering consists of 5 departments and has the largest number of the six academic faculties in the university. The college’s research focus includes three of the major problems facing the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) – securing cyberspace, restoring and improving urban infrastructure, and engineering the tools for scientific discovery. Our Aviation 2032 Strategic Plan seeks to promote student-centered teaching and learning focused on student success, promote basic and applied research, while engaging the local and regional community through outreach and workforce development.

Job requirements

Applicant’s qualifications must include: (a) Ph.D. in industrial engineering or related field; (b) Evidence of the ability to establish a successful externally funded research programme; (c) A strong commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students at a research university; (d) Interest in working in a multidisciplinary team environment across multiple academic and research units. The ability to obtain a security clearance would be advantageous.
