Our Liquid Waste Services Department is seeking a Lions Gate Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor who will effectively and responsibly lead a team of trained and experienced employees to ensure the safe and reliable operation and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). Lions Gate WWTP provides primary treatment to more than 216,000 residents of the West Vancouver region, the City of North Vancouver and the North Vancouver region.
You are: An effective communicator and leader with strong technical training and experience in a plant environment working with wastewater treatment operations, meeting regulatory requirements. You are well versed in performance management practices, embrace innovation and continuous improvement, while also being financially responsible and minimizing risks to the operation.

This role:
- Manages operations of the Lions Gate Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). Leads and coordinates processing operations, maintenance and quality control activities, and ensures regulatory and other performance standards are met.
- Responsible for budget preparation, reporting and resource allocation; Monitors and controls spending to ensure effective and efficient expenditure of allocated funds. Works closely with the Department Manager, Operations, Maintenance, Quality Control, laboratory and engineering staff to determine overall priorities and develop work plans. Contributes to the preparation of the department’s long-term strategic and financial plans.
- Monitors plant performance and reports results internally and externally as required. Develop and implement plans to improve operations, improve performance, and address deficiencies. Ensures changes are communicated appropriately and implemented consistently. Encourages and implements new and innovative ideas to improve plant performance and keeps pace with industry best practices.
- Addresses problems and emergencies and ensures ongoing compliance with station regulatory requirements. Makes decisions regarding emergency and preventive maintenance on critical equipment and notifies the Department Director and appropriate regulatory agencies as required. Analyzes historical data and consults process experts to complete necessary work.
- Supports operations supervisory staff in scheduling and prioritizing maintenance work. Evaluates and approves recommendations in consultation with the Department Manager on complex operational situations as required.
- – Communicate with regulatory agencies and member municipalities on permitting and operating issues. Review and evaluate reports and recommendations and make decisions to address problems. Works closely with counterparts in other departments to plan and implement facility improvements and capital projects. Contributes to infrastructure plans and ensures operational interests are appropriately integrated.
- Hires, supervises, directs and develops performance control of employees in accordance with goals and objectives. Ensures adherence to company policies and collective agreements. Leaders, trainers and mentors recognize the importance of leadership, supervisory and technical training. Develop and maintain a flexible workforce and encourage employees to pursue opportunities that complement their skills and experience.
- Works collaboratively with employees to resolve technical or interpersonal issues they encounter while doing their work; Monitors work assignments to ensure they are appropriately staffed and funded. Facilitates the exchange of information to transfer knowledge and experience and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the team.
- Ensures that employees and contractors perform their work in accordance with company and WorkSafe BC regulations. Ensures safe work procedures are integrated into plant operations. Responsible for responding to emergencies and major incidents. Guides operating personnel in response efforts and provides timely notifications of OC non-compliance to the Department Manager.
- Works collaboratively with the Department Director and other senior staff to develop, prioritize, and approve annual and long-term budgets and strategic plans. Works collaboratively to achieve business plan objectives and evaluates the effectiveness of plant activities on an ongoing basis.
- Performs other related duties as required.
To be successful you must:
- 7 years of recent relevant experience supported by a university degree in an engineering or technical field related to wastewater treatment. Or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Relevant professional or technical designation is an asset.
- British Columbia Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators Certification EOCP Class IV or equivalent provincial certification.
- Significant technical experience in wastewater treatment processes including knowledge of mechanical, electrical, automation and systems used in wastewater treatment plants. Considerable knowledge of wastewater treatment operating best practices and performance indicators. Demonstrated ability to solve complex performance problems and provide guidance to operating personnel.
- Considerable knowledge of relevant regulatory considerations such as provincial and federal effluent discharge requirements and other issues impacting regulatory compliance.
- Budget preparation and sound financial management skills. Ability to monitor budgets, achieve financial goals and ensure effective and efficient expenditure of allocated funds.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including well-developed report writing and presentation skills; Ability to communicate complex technical requirements and implications to diverse audiences.
- – Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships. Skill in dealing frankly, tactfully, and sensitively in a variety of situations and responding effectively to emotional stimuli in oneself and others.
- Proven ability to use judgment to analyze and solve complex problems with diverse implications; Ability to develop new procedures and plans to address problems and improve efficiencies while taking into account the long-term impacts of decisions and actions. An innovative thinker with the ability to influence and persuade others and build the trust and shared understanding required to implement change.
- Ability to manage a complex portfolio of work while setting ambitious and challenging targets; Shows perseverance in overcoming obstacles.
- Sound ability to supervise, train, and mentor others while enhancing individual and group effectiveness. Ability to direct and enhance the development of direct reports.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- A valid BC Class 5 driver’s licence.
