About the role
The Sussex Bioinformatics Laboratory is looking for a skilled postdoctoral researcher in Bioinformatics to join our team.
You will play a central role in the development of… CRUK DATA CENTER – An online platform that makes it easier to find, access and reuse cancer datasets in line with the FAIR Data Principles, working with data scientists at Cancer Research UK and the HDR-UK Health Data Gateway team. In addition to web development, you will work with CRUK-funded cancer data owners to ensure high-quality metadata is entered into the database, create guidance and training materials, and support web design to improve the researcher experience.
In addition to this, you will contribute to… Artificial Intelligence Pearl: Affiliate Projectan AI-powered platform that enables oncologists to use tumor DNA/RNA sequencing data to identify targeted therapies and clinical trials. Your responsibilities will include: processing FASTQ and BAM/CRAM files, producing various call files, generating input data for AI tools and implementing a secure bioinformatics workflow.
You will also help prepare patient-facing documentation, contribute to our business plan for potential investors, lead demonstrations to oncologists, and collect structured feedback. You will be able to attend multidisciplinary CUP (cancer of unknown primary) meetings, analyze pilot study outcomes, and collaborate closely with clinicians to ensure clinical impact.
About you
You will have recently completed a PhD in Bioinformatics or Informatics and will have a passion for transforming complex data into real impact for cancer patients.
You will be excited by the challenge of building safe, reproducible workflows that make this process seamless for researchers and clinicians. You will also have a flair for programming in python and/or Laravel, problem solving, with web development experience and a love for writing clean, well-tested code. If you enjoy combining data science, software engineering, and biology into elegant solutions, you’ll feel right at home here.
Collaboration will be at the heart of your work: you will interact with oncologists, researchers and developers, and translate their needs into tools. You’ll be comfortable switching between the technical details of pipelines and the big picture impact on patient care.
