We have an exciting opportunity in the College of Engineering to contribute to the development of innovative and sustainable solutions for low carbon plastic waste management and recycling.
In this project, the post holder will develop new algorithms and methods to analyze plastic data collected from GIVO centres, including data collected on emerging waste, plastic collection, sorting, mechanical recycling, and contractors. The main focus will be to develop digital tools that can robustly and automatically extract and analyze information/datasets on post-consumer municipal plastic waste management.
The job holder will study the greenhouse gas emissions and conduct an LCA for GIVO’s plastic waste management and recycling solutions with the aim of enhancing the sustainability of the GIVO solution and reducing the impact of plastic waste management.
The post holder will also work collaboratively with project partners based in the UK and Nigeria to apply and test these new tools to achieve important progress in producing detailed datasets on the journey of plastic waste from collection to recycling and reuse, enhancing and scaling up the GIVO solution. In the long term, we hope that this work will support efforts to develop robust solutions, strategies and policies to facilitate the transition towards a circular plastics economy (CPE) in Sub-Saharan Africa.
This post is based at the School of Engineering, University of Warwick Campus, but the successful candidate will be required to undertake regular trips to Nigeria, sometimes for extended periods to participate in field work, workshops etc; So, being prepared to embark on a long-haul trip is essential.
