Research Assistant in Climate Change Impact Attribution at King’s College London
The Department of Geography is a vibrant community of students, teachers and researchers. Our comprehensive approach includes human and physical geography perspectives on global challenges and pressing environmental, geopolitical, urban and rural issues.
Our research findings contribute to public debates and policy development at both national and international levels, making important contributions to climate change, disasters, smart cities, risk regulation, water, human migration and wildfire risk. We are also deeply committed to addressing pressing issues of social justice around the world.
About the role
King’s College London is seeking to appoint a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) to support a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research project focusing on climate change litigation and impact attribution. Based in the Geography Department of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Public Policy, the successful candidate will contribute to the King’s Fund for Climate and Sustainability project, Attributing the impact of extreme events to climate litigation (EXACT).
This role provides an exciting opportunity for an early career researcher with a strong grounding in climate change research – particularly in climate change impact attribution – or in a related discipline with an interest in the impacts of climate change. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Victor Roser (Lecturer in Risk, Environment and Society), and in close collaboration with co-investigator Dr Alex Bradley (Lecturer in Climate and Environmental Science) and a second GRA with a background in climate litigation. Together, the team will co-develop and test a new research framework designed to bridge the gap between legal standards of causation and scientific methods for attributing impact in the context of climate litigation.
The GRA will be responsible for conducting literature reviews, supporting the coordination of high-level academic workshops, and contributing to collaborative research deliverables including peer-reviewed publications and funding proposals. The post holder will play a central role in compiling scientific evidence, helping to create a robust evidence framework for climate litigation.
This role will suit a highly motivated and independent individual with an excellent understanding of climate change attribution, strong research and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team.
This is a part-time position (17.5 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed-term contract until 31 October 2026.
About you
To succeed in this role, we are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:
Basic standards
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, geography, or related discipline
- Good understanding of climate change impact attribution such as climate events or extreme weather that has been demonstrated either through previous work experience or a focus on previous studies
- Previous experience conducting academic research including literature and database searches
- Previous experience planning, organizing and managing multi-stakeholder workshops
- Ability to work independently within an agreed project framework
- Good written and verbal communication skills
Desired standards
- Previous work experience in the context of climate litigation or related field
- Good understanding of climate change and climate attribution
