Are you an occupational hygienist with at least six years of industry-related experience? Would you like to advise stakeholders, using your expertise in occupational hygiene, to help employers prevent occupational diseases, illness and disability? If so, we want to hear from you.

WorkSafeBC’s Occupational Health and Safety Technical Advisory Services within the Prevention, Quality and Engineering Practices Department is looking for a knowledgeable and dedicated Senior Occupational Health Specialist, to lead and participate in issues related to occupational hygiene management processes and strategies. This includes providing technical support to internal and external stakeholders, including a team of occupational hygiene officers and other departments to help us reduce risks and keep workplaces healthy and safe through education, consultation and implementation.

What will you do?

As a Senior Occupational Health Specialist, you will:

  • Promote consistent application of regulatory requirements related to occupational hygiene and health topics and act as a technical resource on complex issues.
  • Lead and/or participate in problem management processes for occupational hygiene and health issues.
  • Research complex occupational hygiene and health issues and recommend solutions or strategies for the effective and practical implementation and effective use of occupational hygiene requirements in various focus sectors.
  • Assist the Director of Occupational Health and Safety Technical Advisory Services in planning, implementing and ongoing maintenance of a comprehensive occupational disease prevention plan of which an occupational exposure database is a critical component.
  • Support the activities of prevention staff and other working groups, including developing and delivering training curricula on a variety of occupational hygiene topics.
  • Coordinate WHMIS plans and activities in accordance with both departmental plans, MOUs and inter-jurisdictional policies. Provide technical guidance to prevention staff involved in provincial and federal WHMIS activities.
  • Establish a consistent model of the appropriate level of organizational behaviors expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsiveness, respect, fairness, cooperation, responsibility, and forward-thinking.

Is this right for you?

We are looking for someone who can:

  • Provide occupational hygiene and health expertise and guidance to WorkSafeBC staff and stakeholders
  • Use critical thinking skills to analyze and evaluate unique hygiene and health issues in the workplace and determine effective controls
  • Develop strategies and solutions to address complex industry issues and initiatives in order to reduce risks and keep workplaces healthy and safe
  • Make and implement timely decisions independently and objectively, using sound judgment and technical knowledge
  • Professionally deal with emergencies and sensitive situations
  • Travel to locations in British Columbia and overnight as required

Your background and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering and at least six years of directly related experience (real-time).
  • A professional designation in good standing as a Certified Industrial Hygienist through the Global Environmental, Health and Safety Accreditation Council or a Registered Occupational Hygienist through the Canadian Registration Council for Occupational Hygienists.

salary: $53.08 – $68.61 per hour
