The Iuav University of Venice and the University of Glasgow are pleased to announce a fully funded joint doctoral fellowship under the Marie-Curie Sklodowska Doctoral Network Program as part of the DECADOCS project. The expected start of the project is January 2026.

This is a 4-year fellowship. The position at the University of Glasgow is for a fixed term of two years (January 2026 – January 2028). The fellowship continues at Iuav University of Venice in 2029/2030.

The project explores Gabriele D’Annunzio’s Republic of Carnaro (September–December 1920) as a “degenerate” society, that is, as a political project in which aesthetics and politics merged to achieve dangerous goals. He compares D’Annunzio’s account of the occupation of Fiume (today’s Rijeka, Croatia) with that of other characters involved in the project, reveals the contradictions inherent in the complex articulation of historical memories, and explores the many ways in which the history of the occupation of Fiume, and the myth of D’Annunzio in relation to the history of the city, continue to be reshaped through literature. Other films and novels.

The project involves research in Vittoriale (D’Annunzio’s house-museum on the Gardone Riviera) and other archives (in Rijeka and Rome), as well as oral interviews with the local community in Rijeka and elsewhere. The results of the research will enable the candidate to develop a series of podcasts that will be shared with the community through a performance developed in collaboration with a theater director.

The successful candidate will be expected to present the result of their research in a written text of approximately 100,000 words, as well as contribute to the translation and digitization of archival materials, create a podcast series, and work with a theater director on staging a play intended to be an educational resource.

Supervision of this project will be divided between the University of Glasgow (Elisa Segnini) and the IUAV University of Venice (Elisa Pizzuto). The successful candidate is expected to divide his studies between Britain (2026-2028) and Italy (2028-2029/2030). The project includes a secondment at the Museo Vittorale, where, in addition to undertaking archival research, the successful candidate will receive additional training and support.

Although priority will be given to applicants who already have strong reading and writing skills in English and Italian (knowledge of Croatian is an added advantage) and a background in historical/literary research of the period, the University of Glasgow and the IUAV are keen to encourage a diverse and wide range of applicants from different backgrounds.

All candidates are advised to visit the following website for further details on eligibility requirements for Marie Curie Initiatives, see in particular page 8 to assess your criteria before submitting an application:- http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/data/ref/h2020/wp/2018-2020/main/h2020-wp1820-msca_en.pdf
