Laboratory Technician at Newcastle University

The role
We are looking for a highly motivated and detail-oriented technician to join our research project focused on understanding the molecular basis of mitochondrial crista biogenesis. This project aims to take advantage of a novel inducible model system and super-resolution microscopy to explore the spatiotemporal dynamics of mitochondrial membrane proteins and their role in cristae formation. Your role will display an in-depth knowledge of technical scientific practices, methods and procedures gained through experience and/or formal qualification, and require you to deploy this knowledge to provide a range of technical support to the group.

You will join a broad community of professional staff at the School of Medicine; Institute of Biological Sciences. You will report to Dr. Uwe Richter and the Institute’s Technical Director and will be asked to assist in experiments using super-resolution fluorescence microscopy and single-molecule tracking techniques. You will also be required to support the research team in collecting, analyzing and interpreting experimental data.

Experience in human tissue work, cell isolation techniques, and wet bench experience would be desirable, but all necessary training and support with techniques will be provided.

Key responsibilities

  • Complete a range of routine and complex maintenance and repair activities.
  • Liaise with suppliers and manufacturers to resolve routine and complex problems and verify replacement options.
  • Provide advice on equipment capabilities that demonstrate how results can be achieved. • Design and delivery of custom equipment and devices.
  • By developing local procedures, establishing and maintaining a safe/compliant work environment • Assume specific safety responsibilities relevant to specialty.
  • Assist in completing and updating a wide range of safety paperwork.
  • Oversee compliance tasks to ensure appropriate records are completed and maintained in a timely manner.
  • Maintain in-depth and up-to-date knowledge of health and safety relevant to the specialty schedule, prioritizing and monitoring work in line with requirements and deadlines.
  • Assume delegated responsibility from the academic leader for planning, operating and supervising laboratory spaces occupied by the specialty.
  • Organizing and facilitating progress meetings. • Be a key contributor to specialty development, delivery and planning. • Contributing to and supporting change.
  • Manage one or more budgets to monitor resource usage. • Source and negotiate with suppliers for a range of items including spare parts/specialist equipment.
  • Establish, update and implement procedures to provide consistent and efficient service. • Providing general and specialized research support, including the development of pioneering methods.
  • Providing general and specialized educational support including developing classroom/field work.
  • Support course projects by enhancing and integrating the specialisation.
  • Prepare and manufacture specimens/specimens requiring specialized skills with limited guidance. • Manage equipment reservations, calculate fees/costs, and assist with reshipping.
  • Contributing to construction work affecting the area occupied by the specialty.
  • Manage local security and access control arrangements.
  • Design, develop and deliver inductions, demonstrations and training covering complex technologies and specialist equipment.
  • Assist managers in identifying training and development needs.
  • Maintain specialized knowledge and skills and share them with others.
  • Mentor of junior staff.
