Director of Innovation at the University of Bristol

The role

The University of Bristol is looking for a Strategic Leader to join us Innovation ManagerTo achieve the impact of our world-leading research, attract new or larger revenue streams and strengthen partnerships with industry and government.

It will work across colleges and professional services to promote collaborative and contract research activity, grow academic entrepreneurship and drive the development of commercial pathways such as licensing and new partnerships. The role also provides strategic oversight of research commercialization and advises on how best to build partnerships, funding models or new business tools to support scalable innovation.

You will work closely with senior academic and professional leaders, including the Executive Director of Research, Enterprise and Innovation, the Professional Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) and their team, and the University’s academic and corporate leadership teams. You will engage with external partners across the business, government and investment communities. Your focus will be on building sustainable, high-value relationships that enhance Bristol’s reputation as a trusted partner for research and innovation.

What will you do?

Reporting to the Executive Director of Research, Enterprise and Innovation, you will:

  • Translating institutional priorities into implementable innovation and enterprise strategies, aligned with the university’s strategic ambitions for innovation.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships across the university to support and grow academic engagement in marketing and projects.
  • Drive growth in industrial collaboration and contract research, with a focus on large-scale partnerships and sustainable cost recovery.
  • Provide strategic oversight of research commercialization activities, including start-up, licensing and translational funding support.
  • Identify and develop new mechanisms (such as joint ventures and investment vehicles) to achieve the impact of the university’s research.
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders and university affiliates to provide innovation space and infrastructure that meets strategic needs.
  • Ensure that innovation services and operational delivery are aligned, effective and aligned with corporate performance indicators, working closely with the Research Office and other professional services.

You must apply then

You have:

  • Strong leadership experience at a high level in research, innovation and commercialization.
  • A proven track record in developing impactful partnerships with industry and government, and a strong network with other universities, government agencies, investors and companies.
  • Extensive experience and success in securing funding for innovation, with a comprehensive understanding of the innovation landscape and higher education policy environment in the UK.
  • Proven experience identifying and developing new ways to achieve commercial impact from research, including new business models.
  • Skilled experience building collaboration in academic and professional services across complex organizations.
  • Desire to drive a bold innovation agenda at a leading global civic university.
