Main purpose and function

The Construction Laborer position carries out a full range of minor cleaning and maintenance tasks in and around civil buildings, with the goal of keeping buildings clean and maintained in a safe and sanitary manner and notifying the immediate supervisor of the need for any building repairs and maintenance.

This position requires a wide range of availability to cover operational needs, which is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including night shifts, weekends and holidays.

Specific duties and responsibilities

  • Cleaning spaces inside civil buildings; Including but not limited to offices, meeting rooms, common spaces, bathrooms, kitchens, changing rooms and steam rooms
  • Mops, washers, waxing and polishing floors and vacuuming carpeted floors
  • Washes and sanitizes bathroom floors, toilets, toilet seats, hand dryers and fixtures
  • Cleans mirrors, windows, window coverings and glass
  • Wash walls, doors, appliances and glass
  • Cleans general entrances and exits including but not limited to glass, doors, and appliances
  • Cleans outdoor grounds, lots, parking lots and stairs
  • Cleaning, washing and sterilizing drinking fountains, sinks and counters
  • Refills soap dispensers, toilet paper, paper towels and other supplies
  • Empty wastebaskets, garbage and recycling bins
  • Empty zero waste stations into appropriate bins
  • Dust furniture and fixtures
  • Opens doors during normal operating hours, closes doors after hours and checks to ensure hazards are prevented
  • Reports maintenance needs, damage, and vandalism to supervisor
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks, driveways and parking areas, using snow shovels and spreading snowmelt/salt in the areas
  • Follows procedures for using chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage to buildings and facilities
  • Maintains storage areas, cleaning equipment, materials, and supplies in a safe and organized manner
  • Compatibly replaces light bulbs, fluorescent tubes and signs in the event of ballast failure
  • Setting up, arranging and removing tables and chairs to prepare for events such as events and meetings
  • Performs minor maintenance and upkeep tasks including, but not limited to, replacing ceiling tiles, tightening loose door handles, and unplugging toilets, sinks, and drains.
  • Performs regularly scheduled deep cleaning tasks including, but not limited to, stripping, waxing, polishing floors, carpet cleaning, shampooing, power washing, high and low dusting, and curtain cleaning.
  • Performs regularly scheduled checks of emergency lights and fire extinguishers and reports results
  • Provides information about building repairs and maintenance for the work order to be approved by the supervisor
  • Adheres to safety methods and procedures, departmental operations and company policies
  • Performs other related duties as required

Qualifications

Education and experience:

  • Completion of a recognized certificate program in building services work and some relevant experience
  • Experience performing a variety of routine manual tasks in the care, cleaning and general maintenance of buildings
  • Experience in operating and using janitorial tools, equipment and supplies

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Working knowledge of materials, tools, methods, safety practices and equipment used in cleaning and maintenance work
  • Ability to arrange an efficient work schedule under minimal direct instruction
  • Good health and sufficient strength to perform a variety of routine manual tasks in the care, cleaning, and general maintenance of buildings
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety rules and regulations and understanding of the use of WHMIS – MSDS
  • Know the characteristics and uses of different cleaning, sterilizing, peeling and waxing compounds
  • Basic knowledge of cleaning products and correct applications
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to work effectively with a team
  • Ability to work independently as needed to support a group effort
  • Ability to effectively explain and demonstrate instructions and guidelines to others

  • Successful police record check or enhanced reliability check required depending on location. Clearance requires that there be no criminal charges or convictions related to this position
