The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, professionalism and a commitment to public safety while conducting inspections, managing sensitive interactions and maintaining high standards in both field and custodial environments. The successful candidate must have the following qualifications:

  1. Completion of high school education or its equivalent.
  2. Complete two years of post-secondary education in one of the following (or a combination of the following):
    • Police and justice
    • Criminology
    • Law enforcement studies
    • Corrections and youth justice
    • Studies of workers in the field of human services
    or
    Complete the BC Auxiliary Police Training Program or Police Officer Training.
    or
    At least one year prior experience in municipal bylaws and regulations enforcement, as a detention guard, in corrections, or as a sheriff.
    or
    Completion of Justice Institute Level I and II Enforcement Certifications or equivalent with six (6) months of experience in a customer relations/service position.
  3. Ability to obtain Level 1 and 2 Enforcement Certifications from the Institute of Justice or equivalent (if not already held).
  4. A valid first aid certificate from professional level 1.
  5. A valid British Columbia Class 5 driver’s license – or equivalent.
  6. Ability to obtain WHMIS certification.
  7. Proficiency in basic Word and basic Excel, as demonstrated by testing. (A success rate of 70% is required).
  8. Ability to obtain and maintain an RCMP Reliability Safety Clearance. If you are unable to obtain or maintain an RCMP Reliability Safety Permit, your employment with the City will be terminated. (To be considered for an RCMP Reliability Security Clearance, applicants must be Canadian citizens or have permanent resident status in Canada. Note: Individuals with permanent resident status must have resided (physically present) in Canada within the last five (5) consecutive years.)
  9. Physical ability requirements, as demonstrated by testing.

For new employees, and for those working in certain positions of trust, including those working directly with vulnerable people, no formal offer of employment will be made until the applicant has completed a police information check. A comprehensive benefits package is included in this position. This is CUPE Local 900.

Giving training opportunity:

For this internship opportunity to be successful, senior applicants must meet the above requirements. Applicants can participate in a maximum of two internship opportunities in Kamloops.
On-the-job experience and training:

Successful candidates for this opportunity will gain the experience and education to become a fully qualified Community Service Officer. The exact duration of the training opportunity may vary based on the previous experience of successful candidates but will be a maximum of two years.
Payment rate:
Successful applicants for this training opportunity will receive a Tier 11 pay rate (external), $38,438 per hour. After successfully completing the training opportunity and being deemed fully qualified, incumbents will move up to Pay Grade 12 (External), $40,316 per hour.
Employee commitment:

Upon successful completion of the training opportunity, applicants must remain in their position for the same amount of time that the employee spent completing the training opportunity.
Hourly rate

Successful applicants for this training opportunity will receive a Tier 11 pay rate (external), $38,438 per hour. After successfully completing the training opportunity and being deemed fully qualified, incumbents will move up to Pay Grade 12 (External), $40,316 per hour.
Working hours and days

4 days on / 4 days off * 12 hour shifts 6:00am – 6:00pm 6:00pm – 6:00am * Shift allocated based on shift pattern availability *
