Position overview
1199SEIU is looking for an accomplished strategic leader to work for it CFO. The CFO will be responsible for all aspects of the Federation’s financial, investment and risk management operations.

The CFO will oversee 1199SEIU’s budget and funds of over $240 million and will be responsible for strategically aligning finances and operations with the union’s strategic goals.

Reporting directly to the Treasurer, the CFO provides accounting, budgetary, operational and programmatic support for all union programs and activities. The CFO will also oversee the union’s investments and audit process.

The CFO will serve as a thought partner and trusted advisor to the Treasurer and executives, providing financial analysis and forecasts to guide strategic decision-making. The CFO will be a trusted steward of member dues and ensure the highest levels of financial responsibility.

The CFO will manage a talented and dedicated team of over fifteen employees and will work within the executive management team.

The ideal candidate is a financial strategist with extensive financial experience as well as great interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a variety of stakeholders. Our next CFO will have unquestionable integrity, trustworthiness, and a deep commitment to workers and to social and racial justice.

Key responsibilities

  • Leading the financial, investment and risk management operations in the Union
  • Setting the tone for fiduciary responsibility across the union
  • Effectively manage daily operations, ensure quality, effective internal controls, and strong oversight of member dues
  • Develop clear financial strategies and lead financial forecasting, budgeting and long-term planning in partnership with executive leadership
  • Work closely with the Treasurer to lead the annual budgeting and planning process, ensuring budget alignment with the organization’s strategic objectives
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial forecasts, analyzes and reports for 1199SEIU programs and activities
  • Providing strategic advice, financial analysis, and financial forecasts to executives
  • Maintain and monitor insurance coverage and policies, including automobile; Providing recommendations to the Motor Vehicles Committee
  • Manage a high-performance team of 15+ employees as well as vendors and consultants
  • Oversee accounting control systems and internal audit processes, ensuring accurate and timely production of accounting information and financial reports
  • Serve as primary liaison with the independent auditor to ensure the annual audit is completed smoothly and in a timely manner
  • Ensure that the investment portfolio of 1199SEIU is linked to the impact, return, risk and management of investment activity
  • Monitor changes in the legal, regulatory, and administrative environments and implement changes as needed to maintain compliance while maximizing operational and financial results
  • Continuously evaluate and enhance financial systems, processes and practices

Key qualifications

  • At least 10 years of financial management in a senior leadership position
  • Financial management experience with an organization with operations exceeding $50 million
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (LMRDA), nonprofit financial practices, and reporting requirements
  • Experience working with advocacy, campaigns, or political organizations. Union experience is preferred
  • Extensive knowledge of financial planning and management systems, along with accounting and financial reporting procedures in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
  • Exceptional strategic and analytical thinking skills, with the ability to utilize financial information to make informed budgetary and financial decisions
  • Unquestionable ethics, self-motivation, reliability, and strong attention to detail
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills with the ability to work with a variety of stakeholders
  • – Knowledge and experience in investment portfolio management
  • Strong understanding of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA)
  • Experience obtaining and maintaining union insurance, especially auto and liability
  • Ability to communicate complex financial concepts to a variety of stakeholders
  • A deep commitment to working people and to social and racial justice
  • Experience in property and real estate management is a plus
  • CPA or Certified Management Accountant required
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or commensurate experience demonstrating exemplary strategic and financial acumen

Physical requirements, orientation and decision making
The position is based in New York, NY and is expected to work in the office four days per week.

The CFO reports directly to the Treasurer.

Salary and benefits
The salary range for this position is $225,000 – $250,000, depending on experience. 1199SEIU offers an excellent benefits package.
