How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:
The Assistant Arborist Technician performs field work in arboriculture, forest management, forest health, hazard maintenance, invasive species control and management, and assists in implementing resource management projects and programs. The position includes working as part of a team member in tree inventory, assessment, evaluation, trimming, clearing, felling, pest and invasive species extermination for the Restoration, Resource Management and Capital Projects business unit.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides active operational support in the following programs:

    • Forestry – stands, forest inventory and data collection, risk tree assessment, monitoring and removal, forest pest monitoring and mitigation/control, access to conservation projects

  • Invasive Species Management – Patch management, inventory collection, data collection, monitoring, removal and support to treat and control invasions using a range of hand tools and equipment. Operating equipment including but not limited to:

    • Tractors with planter, cat-driven or winch-driven, cutters, chain saws, gas-powered pole saws, UTVs, trucks up to AZ with float or trailer and beam boom attachment, and full spectrum of related climbing, jamming, rigging, roughage and herbicide/pesticide.
    • Performs department checks on assigned vehicles and equipment, reports any issues, and locks/tags out if necessary

  • Participates in daily safety meetings including tailgate meetings, hazard identification and emergency planning

What you will need to succeed:

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificates/Licenses)
• Completion of a college diploma in arboriculture, urban forestry, or a related field
• Valid chainsaw training certificate
• Ontario G2 driver’s license

• 1+ years of relevant experience in tree services

Knowledge/Skill/Ability – Competencies
• Demonstrate the ability to understand, interpret and apply forest management plans, drawings, details and specifications
• Understand arboreal tree climbing skills and aerial rescue techniques
• Understand and apply basic mathematical functions (e.g. add, subtract, measure, count money)
• Ability to communicate effectively with tact and courtesy
• Able to manage workload and prioritize tasks as a constant challenge in a repetitive workload and multiple deadlines
• Knowledge of occupational health and safety law, relevant regulations and legislation
