The Department of Physics at Durham University is one of the best physics departments in the UK with an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching, research and the employability of our students. It was ranked in the top ten in the 2022 Reference for strength, and 96% of Durham’s physics research was deemed to be either ‘internationally excellent quality’ or ‘world-leading’.

The post holder will be responsible for learning and assisting with technical functions and day-to-day technical operations in the Quantum Light and Matter Research Group (Physics Department), providing technical and engineering assistance from within the technical team.

The holder will be required to post formal training in the Department’s Quantum Light and Matter (QLM) research laboratories with the opportunity to gain further skills from placements in electronic mechanical engineering and engineering workshops to provide technical assistance in support of research activities undertaken within QLM.

In addition, there will be the opportunity to receive training from Science Technology Facilities Council (STFC) qualified engineers and technicians and have placements at national facilities, such as the Bowlby Underground Laboratory.

The post holder will be required to follow an approved apprenticeship training framework from a Laboratory Technician discipline delivered by an external provider. The role includes on-the-job competency training and theoretical knowledge with BTEC Level 3 Applied Science.
