About the position
The community archivist for the Graterford Archives will manage all aspects of the digital archive implementation of this multi-year Mellon-funded freedom-seeking project. The Graterford Archive is a grant-funded project to develop a digital archive documenting the experiences of those affected by State Correctional Institution (SCI)-Gratterford, including incarcerated and formerly incarcerated men, their loved ones, and their communities. The project brings together many community groups already working in this field, as well as faculty and students who engage with cancer issues as part of Haverford’s decades-long engagement with artists and activists at SCI-Graterford. The project is guided and infused with the “Nothing About Us Without Us” ethos, and will involve members of the Graterford community throughout.
The community archivist will join a team working on the Graterford Archive that includes an executive director, a project manager, the college’s director of curriculum innovation, and library staff. The Community Archivist will also work closely with currently incarcerated partners and community groups. The Community Archivist will be based in Quaker & Special Collections with ongoing support to the libraries throughout the project.
Basic responsibilities
- In collaboration with the Graterford Archives team, implement ethical practices in collecting archival and oral history in the context of the cancer case, including documentation of practices and procedures
- Manage all aspects of the process of collecting and digitizing archival materials, in consultation with the Quaker and Special Collections team
- Identify, develop and maintain relationships with community partners in order to build the digital archive
- Work closely with community partners to organize digitization events and communicate with keepers and creators of relevant materials in order to digitize materials that may be included in the archive
- Research the history of SCI-Graterford within the broader context of Pennsylvania’s prison system, mass incarceration, prison architecture, the history of American prison writing, prison education, and beyond.
- Implementation of the Mukurtu digital platform for the Graterford Archive and uploading of materials
- Implement metadata schemas and descriptive practices for archival materials consistent with the Graterford Archive’s vision as a project in search of freedom
- Assist in training team members and community partners in oral history and archival collection and preservation methods
- Work with community groups who also work in cancer archives to find a permanent home for the Graterford Archive
- Attending periodic meetings of the project advisory committee
- Support the overall direction of the project and respond to challenges and opportunities as needed
Report line: The Community Archivist reports to the Head of Quaker and Special Collections and the Executive Director of the Graterford Archive Project.
Minimum qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- – Three years of experience working in archives or libraries
Professional competencies
- Experience working on community focused projects
- Ability to work respectfully, collaboratively, and effectively with project partners, community stakeholders, and campus stakeholders
- Ability to work respectfully, collaboratively and effectively with people who are experiencing loss, grief and trauma as a result of their experiences with the cancerous condition
- Demonstrate knowledge of traditional and community metadata schemas and critical cataloging theory and practices
- Demonstrated project management experience
- Show strong attention to detail
Preferred qualifications
- MLIS or equivalent degree
- Demonstrate knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of archival and oral history, including community-based and trauma-informed practices
- -Proven experience working with digital collections or digital archives
- Demonstrated ability to work in the community, facilitating community stakeholder meetings and community focused events
- – Knowledge of the cancer system and its history in the United States, especially Pennsylvania
