Set Laser Scientists in STFC

First Laser World – Development of Laser Laser Programs – Uplift

Science and Technology Facilities Council

Salary: 51,242 pounds – 56,366 pounds annually (depends on skills and experience)

Working hours: full time

Contract type: a specific contract contract for 3 years

Location: Science and Technology Facilities Council, Recordord Appleon Harwell, Oxfordshire Ox11 0de

Come and discover the type of influence that you can make when you work with some of the best facilities and shiny scientists in the world.

There is an exciting opportunity to join the CDF, at the Recordord Appleon Laboratory, to work on the UK UPLIFT self -fusion technology. This is a 4 -year research program worth 10 million pounds, funded by the Ministry of Energy Security and Net Zero, affiliated with the United Kingdom government. Uplift’s goal is to develop science and basic technologies that will be required to achieve energy generation through laser -paid self -inclusion energy (IFE). A successful candidate will be a member of a large multidisciplinary team that works on the Uplift laser development package.

We seek to develop an effective and high -power laser concept, with a low -cost solution to meet the requirements of the future power plant. The work package was assigned to present a practical offer for the main components technology to develop a preliminary model of the Laser engine, with the ability to provide an effective source (> 10%) for high power pulses at a rate of 10 pulses per second. Technologies will rely on solid -state laser chains, oscillator, and a solid -state MOPA (MOPA) using the Dipole -PVD technique developed by CLF. Infrastructure should be able to provide the required frequency range and expansion to meet the requirements of the future laser IFE power plant.

CLF contains many modern laser systems and experimental stations, as well as scientists, engineers and experts who work with academic and industrial users to provide science through a wide range of fields. We have about 200 employees, they are a very friendly and open department and deals with the outside. We have a welcome and comprehensive culture, and you will find that people will help you and support you normally.

About the role

It will join the Calta Technology and Applications Center and will support the Uplift project to develop new designs for laser operating programs, build initial models systems, and conduct experimental test campaigns. It will work closely with a team of laser scientists and engineers, and you will work with the broader Uplift team to understand the effects of integration physics and design goals on the specifications of the laser engine. You will also deal with external experts and collaborators in the UK and around the world to gain knowledge and enhance the group’s research capabilities. You will have the opportunity to present your research at international conferences and publishing in the prestigious magazines reviewed by the peer.

The main fields of the role include the following:

• Contributing greatly to the visual design of the concept of the new laser engine, conducting visual modeling of sub -systems, and determining the specifications of the initial model.

• Developing modeling activities, including laser and thermal management models (CFD & FE), to predict the performance of the system and help the design.

• Determine and conduct concept proof tests to remove the risk of major components techniques.

• Contacting suppliers and external contractors to determine the current capabilities and future requirements and develop cooperative links with external facilities.

• Work as part of the contact team with engineers to design the main mechanical equipment for the initial model testing.

• Leading and managing a small team to build and test the components of the initial model in the laser laboratory to prove the effectiveness of designs.

• Contributing greatly to the strategy and definition of the conceptual design of the appropriate laser operating program to expand to meet the requirements of the future IFE power plant in cooperation with the broader Uplift project.

About you

You must have great knowledge of laser science and non -linear optics. You will be familiar with a solid -condition laser design and have an experience in extinguishing pulse laser.

You will have experience in modeling or simulation and you will be able to apply this knowledge in the design of laser systems.

You will enjoy good skills in dealing with others and the ability to work as part of a team of individuals who have a variety of knowledge and experience.

Person specifications

The following criteria will be evaluated in the brief menu (S), interview (i) or both (S & I)

  • PhD in physics or closely related theme (or equivalent experience). (Q)
  • Post -PhD research (or equivalent -related experience) with a record of independent research or independent thinking. (S & I)
  • Great knowledge of laser physics and optics. (S & I)
  • Modern practical experience in operating, developing and modeling laser systems and visual descriptions. (S & I)
  • A busy record of publishing in the magazines reviewed by the peer. (Q)
  • Efficiency with Matlab,/or LabView and Zemax/Optic Studio or other equivalent visual design programs. (S & I)
  • Knowledge of safety issues and procedures for laser operation. (S & I)
  • Previous experience in the successful management of technical projects and/or people. (S & I)
