Postdoctoral Research Associate, Storymachine Project at University of London

The School for Advanced Study (SAS) includes eight world-renowned research institutes as well as centers in digital humanities and public engagement. It has four specialized research libraries that are nationally and internationally recognized. This is an important component of the national humanities infrastructure and part of the University of London, and this is a really exciting time to join the School of Advanced Study as we embark on a new strategic plan.
The Digital Humanities Research Center (DHRH) at SAS supports a variety of digital approaches to the humanities across the UK and beyond. The hub includes a core team of researchers with connections to specific disciplines, including Classics, English, History and Modern Languages, who support and collaborate with projects and initiatives, provide training and teaching in digital methods and approaches, and carry out interdisciplinary research and supervision. DHRH currently hosts the UK Digital Humanities Society.

The role
The School of Advanced Study, University of London, is a partner in a major international research project: ‘Project Story Project: exploring the implications of recommendation-based spatial hypertext systems for folklore and the humanities’. The story is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council in the UK and the Deutsche Forschungsschaft in Germany (see https://storymachine.iisys.de/). It aims to preserve and explore folklore traditions and make more accessible folklore traditions in Germany and the UK, through the development of new digital infrastructure. Folklore is a crucial element in the construction of identity and cultural understanding, but it faces archival and cultural challenges. The research will generate new insights into the relationships between folklore and identity construction by investigating key differences and common rules in storytelling between participants from different geographical regions, cultural backgrounds and age groups.
We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) who will help deliver academic, community and community engagement activities on the project, including focus groups and workshops. They will also be responsible for managing social media and other digital communications and contributing to other project work packages.
This role is FTC for 24 months, working 17.5 hours per week.
