About section
NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the nation’s top academic veterinary medical centers, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs more than twenty clinical services with board-certified specialists and is nationally renowned, ensuring that VH is at the forefront of veterinary medicine.

Patients benefit from the combined experience of multiple specialists in using a team approach to the patient’s health care. Every year, approximately 35,000 patients are treated at VH. VH provides compassionate care, specialized healthcare, expert clinical education to veterinary students in their fourth year of veterinary school, and the continued investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.

Essential job duties
The Department of Anesthesiology provides anesthesia support to a variety of patients across campus including small, large and exotic, providing exposure to a range of advanced medical conditions and procedures.
A person in this department must possess a good basic knowledge of veterinary medicine, have good time management skills, a strong desire to work in a rapidly changing teaching environment, and the ability to collaborate with a diverse group of people.

This position interacts with in-house specialty services requiring anesthesia support and its staff and relevant physicians and students to provide coordination, departmental structure, and assistance with veterinary care for all patients associated with the anesthesia service.


Direct duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists in setting up induction station, including monitoring equipment and disposable supplies
  • Assists in transporting patients to the induction room, surgical suites, diagnostic rooms, and recovery sites
  • Delivers continuous supplies to all anesthesia team members at various locations through small and large animal hospitals, including on-hand supplies, controlled-release medications, point-of-care diagnostic testing supplies, and monitoring equipment
  • Maintains the preparation room by constantly cleaning and organizing stations, and pre- and post-narcotic events
  • Helps clean up large animal recovery sites
  • Daily restocking, ordering and management
  • Maintains a clean and working environment following hospital standards, infectious disease policies and hospital policies, along with OSHAand EHS Radiation safety policies and training courses
  • Equipment maintenance including cleaning, inspection, troubleshooting and documentation of specific anesthesia equipment e.g ECG Monitors, direct and indirect blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeters, capinograms, gas analyzers, anesthesia and ventilation machines

Direct patient care duties include but are not limited to:

  • Patient setting, sample submission, medical treatments including TPRExpression of bladder, vein, patient position
  • Assists anesthesiologists with monitoring and use of IV fluid pumps, syringe pump, ECGdirect and indirect blood pressure, pulse oximeter, capinograph, gas analyzer, temperature and various diagnostic test
  • Helps with CPR And support life saving
The position provides primary coordination of patient, departments, and hospitals in workflow, information, and teaching with duties to include, but not limited to:
  • Records and communicates a variety of data related to patient care, diagnostic tests, and treatments with the use of hospital information systems.
  • Orient, teach and train new staff, students, interns and residents in relevant policies and procedures and patient care
  • Monitors, reports, and documents antibiotic-resistant, infectious, and persistent information related to anesthesia areas
