The primary purpose of the organizational unit

WUNC Radio provides high-quality news, information and entertainment programming to a broad listening audience spanning North Carolina, the United States and the world. WUNC It serves North Carolinians from Greensboro to the Outer Banks through a network of ten stations.

Position summary

A collaboration of public radio stations across North Carolina is hiring a reporter to cover state government and politics. The focus will be on stories that resonate with audiences outside of Raleigh. The project is known as the North Carolina Newsroom. The initial funding covers the first year of this position. This position is located in Raleigh with opportunities for some remote work. The correspondent will be A WUNC employee. Reports will include fast-paced news, interviews, reporter debriefs, pin-ups, online reports and well-researched feature reports. The reporter will work collaboratively with the NC Newsroom Editor/Reporter, WUNC’s Capitol Bureau Chief, and news staffs at partner stations. This position reports to the Supervising Editor of Politics at WUNC.

Since news events do not fit the usual 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule, there are times when a reporter is called to work during weekends and after business hours. The reporter is also expected to participate in fundraisers and station events.

Minimum education and experience requirements

Relevant post-baccalaureate degree (or equivalent foreign degree) is required; For candidates who demonstrate comparable independent research productivity or a similar background in independent academic or teaching activities, a relevant bachelor’s degree (or equivalent foreign degree) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in the substitution field will be accepted. This experience may be related to directing/supervising programs that focus the academic and research resources of a higher education institution toward community or regional issues.

Required qualifications, competencies and experience

The NC Newsroom Reporter will be an experienced journalist with strong communication skills.

Preferred qualifications, competencies and experience

Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field, Master’s degree preferred.
– At least three years of experience as a radio journalist and/or producer, preferably in a public radio newsroom.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Creativity and initiative.
Demonstrated ability to plan, meet deadlines, and work with materials from a variety of sources and collaborators.
Demonstrated ability to work with colleagues effectively and collaboratively. Familiarity with politics and North Carolina.
Experience in public radio or related non-profit fundraising.
