Senior laboratory technician at Birmingham University
salary: Usually, the start -up salary in the range is 29,647 pounds, to 31,460 pounds, with a possible time in the post to 35,388 pounds.
Role summary
Technical experience, support and counseling will provide our research and facilities laboratories. You will need an understanding of laboratory techniques and experimental protocols to enable you to advise and solve problems and solve them, and properly suggest solutions to issues that arise.
The postal holder is also expected to maintain laboratory equipment, request consumables, implement laboratory induction, write / maintain a COSH assessment database, evaluate laboratory risk and standard operating procedures when necessary.
The postal holder will also provide support and contribute to the activities of the college under the supervision of the technical director and heads of operations in schools as required.
Main duties
- Controlly support for practical laboratory research activities in Colles schools including but not limited to, microscopy, wet laboratory techniques, media/sample preparation.
- Implementing or assisting experiments in the facilities.
- Provide advice on the techniques and experimental procedures used by researchers and/or students. This will include communication with colleagues at a set of levels and inexperienced students.
- Diagnosing and solving problems and suggesting solutions related to technologies and experiments.
- Contact directly and work closely with PIS, researchers after doctorate, university students and other internal and external users in projects and experiments.
- Maintaining accurate records of all the technologies and experimental procedures that they implement, create or update them when necessary, that is, cash procedures related to equipment.
- Ensure compliance with legislation related to the field of research/activity, for example, CosHH, LEV, pressure systems, lifting equipment.
- Contribute to internal and external audit procedures and organizational inspection.
- Explining and repairing errors and contacting technical problems and communicating with the manufacturer to organize maintenance visits and scheduled services.
- Contribute to the facility bill and maintenance of the facility’s budgets by ensuring the best use of equipment through the applicable reservation systems, if appropriate.
Person specifications
- Certificate in Environmental Sciences/Earth Sciences/Theme of Geographical Sciences/Biological Sciences or its equivalent in experiment.
- Good health and safety knowledge in the use of safe treatment of laboratory equipment, chemicals and dangerous materials.
- Extensive experience in the workplace, professional qualifications or equivalent certificate in a suitable topic.
- In -depth practical knowledge of relevant technical and scientific methods.
- Extensive experience in the same laboratory -based work, along with familiarity with a wide range of laboratory equipment.
- The positive service position shows a courtesy in dealing with others.
- The ability to organize and manage private work burden and show flexibility in terms of work/requirements.
- The ability to work under the minimum supervision, but work as part of the team.
- Knowing the current legislation related to the role.
- Knowing the current H&S policies and the ability to support the same thing.
- Efficiency in software packages is common.
- It understands the importance of equality and diversity in the workplace.
- The ability to define equality, diversity and response issues in line with relevant policies and procedures.
